Oh boy! We get to talk you into all kinds of things!! :celebrate :weee :jumpy

Start with a bunch of chicks. They will be in a brooder for a while. Then you begin building your first coop. Build it twice as big as you think you need it. 4 ft.² per bird, and 10 ft.² in the run.
As you build, you will find other breeds of chickens you realize you need. Give in, and buy them!
Once you are satisfied with your 48 chicks (about a month from now), you can begin adding ducks and turkeys. Then come the goats.
Don't worry! We are all here for you! There is always someone who can tell you where to find your next animal!

Might have to get goats first if your significant other won't get you a turkey because you already filled a new coop and duck pen and got guineas coming and your already talking about more baby chicks you have to have that you don't have room for..... But goats are cute..... Still really really want some turkeys.....

Hello, welcome to BYC.
I am not aware of anyone locally (on the Pa Unite thread) who sells sexed banty chicks. Vent sexing as day olds is very difficult, and mistakes still happen, even with the most experienced folks. To try vent sexing banty chicks (such as silkies) becomes very unreliable so most folks wouldn't want to risk selling birds as pullets and having to correct mistakes later on.

Even if you find 'sexed chicks' it isn't a guarantee that you won't end up with a rooster. You may need to buy started pullets if you absolutely can't have roosters. Otherwise you will have to make arrangements ahead of time for what to do with roosters you get by mistake.

If you can't have roosters what are you going to do with the hens when they want to raise chicks of their own, as most silkie hens like to do multiple times a year?
Hmmm, market opportunity for sexlinked bantams? Think I will do that for next year.

it says 270 chicken eggs! We just plugged it in . :celebrate

I'm going to need some parts, like the egg trays and the wick pads.

It depends on the size of the egg trays you use. Most trays are about 12 inches square and can hold 30 large eggs like turkeys, 48 standard chicken eggs, 59 Pheasant/bantam eggs, or 120 quail eggs. You can get 6 trays in the turner, so 6 * 48 = 288 regular chicken eggs.

There were no trays with it?
Those wick pads are pricy and you only want them during the hatch. I haven't needed them for a while.

Well, that makes sense. No wick pads b/c no hatching in it. Nope, only one tray. Maybe this is MsLadyHawk's way of keeping my hatching under control...? @dHetzel, do you have a recommendation for trays?

Are you hatching any of the Lavender Americaunas now? I have a broody who will need chicks in the next couple of weeks. Hubby liked the pic of the LAs I showed him and some green/blue eggers would work great for us. I would love to buy some and can come over to pick them up if you have any available.

The first ones of the season should be hatching this week. I'm not sure how many I set but they'll be hatching every week. You know I can meet you in Northern Cambria ;)

Www.cutlersupply.com is a great place for parts. They have just about everything. I never use wick pads at all for mine. I highly recommend getting the water reservoir bucket for the top. I made my own and only used the float device and tube lol.

TY! This is an older model as,well. It is an incubator with no hatching tray.

Mine has no hatching tray either though it has a spot for one. I've had to hatch in it before though. All I did was another water reservoir to the bottom (pie pan) and use one of the hatching trays. It didn't quite fit in the spot, but I made it work lol

I found these on Amazon. Does this look right? Temp is holding at 99! I feel giddy

Looks about right :) Mine came with bantam trays when I bought it but I didn't have bantam eggs to hatch at the time. Dheltzel was able to set me up with some old trays but I'm going to have to eventually get some new ones. They're getting rather brittle with age.

Thank You Aurora! Trays ordered.

We were taking some photos yesterday. My lil girl is getting bigger.

I'm like...'you're holding that bird wrong, you are holding that bird wrong...!'
