Little Miss Lonely is doing much better now that she has some brooder mates to hang out with (experimental silkie x silkie feathered ameraucana was a total success btw). She still loves one on one time and likes picking on me but at least she's not crying endlessly because she's alone anymore!

These babies are so cute! :drool I always love Silkies. Especially I don't have chicken limitation anymore. Well, I have to build a coop first.

Just plan on making sure there is room to add more coops... that way you can keep more roosters and you don't have to worry about them fighting over the ladies. ;)

I messed up guys... I booked a last minute trip with my friend to take the human kids to Kalahari... but I didnt realize it fell on HATCH DAY. These broody mamas (2) are first time moms and are sharing a nest. Hatch day is supposed to be Sunday and we will be gone all of Sunday and all of Monday. This is the first time I'm letting broodies hatch eggs and I'm nervous they'll mess up and chicks will die and I won't be here to save them. Reassure me that it will be okay or give me some advice... or tell me I need to find someone from whom i can borrow one of those fancy baby monitors that let's me see video and hear audio from my phone (does this actually exist) so I can sit and watch the chicks while my kids play in the water.

Leave the moms alone. New mothers can’t bond properly when everyone is hovering over them.
I wouldn’t feel bad if a mom killed her babies. I’d still give her a second chance to figure it out. If I’d been interfering, I’d blame myself for adding stress.
iPhones have a monitor app. Just put an iPod or something in the coop. Or, buy a fancy monitor or a regular surveillance system.

Well, Colleen is still in solitary. I tried putting her in with the others after I took her to the Celtic Fling and the roo and the only other remaining original chicken went after her right away. This was after them all being out of the run for the first time in months since we can't let the huskies out there because they escape the fence. So I thought if I let them all out, then put them to bed all together, they'd cooperate. Nope. She did spend most of the day off to herself. I almost want to bring her in the house but that won't work because of the two younger dogs. I guess she'll just have her own pen.

Does any one want feed bags? Those plasticy ones with the mesh embed? I was going to make market bags out of them so I saved tons of them but my machine really is not up to that. What do you do with all yours? Are they recycled anywhere?

There’s a recent thread about that. One I hadn’t thought of was as a drop cloth when gardening, or laying on the ground to do something.
