Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

I remember having around 100 chickens a couple years ago. That included a lot of roos headed for freezer camp though. Turkeys have always stayed between 12 and 15. I'm down to around 25 chickens now and will be down to 12 turkeys after this weekend.

Large Fowl Chickens
98 Legbars
78 Welbars
72 Ameraucanas
49 Marans
30 Genetic Hackle
23 Ayam ketawa
23 Spitzhauben
12 Leige Fighters
9 Ayam cemani
7 Denizli long crowers
5 Polish
Wow -- what caught my eye is the 23 Spitzhaubens! Can't wait to try them again. I am a bit sad about only 5 Polish -- they really are very fragile chickens, aren't they?

I've been working out pens for all my breeders for next year. I needed to make a rough census to allocate space for the different flocks. I thought some of you might be interested in numbers. These are only what is in pens right now, I don't count the ones running loose on the farm.

That's a decent amount of chickens! I had about that many this fall until I started selling extras and processing for our own use. I am down to about 250 now. I'll need to cut down to 75 by March 30th. 400 of those were Cubalaya, about half and half standard and bantam. The rest are blue-ish egg layers, Marans, Olive Eggers and crosses of all with Cubalaya. Here are a couple that resemble Cubalaya more then actual mixes except for the muffs

I almost can't wait to get these into a breeding pens and make more of them!

The Spitz are probably about half males, I hope to end up with a breeding pen of 5 - 7 pullets and my best roos for each color.
I don't think I lost any of the Polish, even the extra roos I set free seem to be hanging around the barnyard. I didn't get many of the gold chicks. I think I am going to sell the polish, I just put an ad up on craigslist. They are not in danger of being lost and polish chicks are not that popular, since I can't sex them. Anyone that wants polish can probably be convinced to get Spitz instead.

I have a couple beautiful houseguests for a little while. A friend of mine is struggling with covid right now and asked me to please take his peas until he recovers. I'm swinging by his house here and there in the meantime to make sure the rest of his birds have food and water. I guess it's hitting him pretty hard.

Those are impressive, and I bet the extra roos make good butcher birds. Sounds like a great "all around" mix for a homesteader, if I remember correctly you said the hens are wicked great broodies also.?...
They are. These youngsters mother hatched 10 in this brood and raised all of them.

Myself is having COVID and isolated at home now, but barely feel any sickness. It looks like there’s a COVID outbreak at PA now. With over 80% people vaccinated in PA doesn’t help too much. I’m so tired of this COVID thing! :hmm

I'm glad you're not feeling bad! We had it in July and for 3 weeks it was very rough. DH and I were so exhausted and slept A LOT. We didn't even know it was covid for about a week so I was still going to work. I only missed about a day and a half. I did wear a mask when I was actually around anyone else and didn't end up giving it to anyone thankfully. I will admit that we are not vaccinated but I think we have some good antibodies after that! I know that we were around multiple people that had it afterwards and we haven't even picked up a sniffle.
