Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

Do you allow people to pick up chicks from you, seeing as H5N1 is still out there are PA is, in general, a poultry producing state (and has a lot of waterfowl.) I do not know if my pitiful small number for purchase would make it worth your while or not.

Sorting Marans breeders today and turned on the lights for the first time (6 AM to 4 PM). Looks like I will have 4 pens of Marans, each with 4 to 7 hens. That sounds like a lot, but for most of the season, Marans chicks will be oversold and I will have a waiting list, especially for breeders looking for certain genetics.

Starting to get more eggs each day. I think I will wait until the 6th to set the first eggs of 2025.
I have two 7 month pullets started to lay at the end of December. It's very strange since it's the shortest day light of the year. I really like to get more Welbars and rose comb Legbars, but my coop is very full and I ordered 3 silkies to replace the two died last year. I guess that I have to wait a couple more years until some chickens passed. I don't think I'm really looking forward for more broodies in winter though, but my son just wants silkies so badly.

Of course, most of my chicks are picked up by local people, with "local" being relative. I have had people drive from Ohio!

It's been quite a while since I've been on here as my thread has just gone crazy over the years and I can barely keep up with it. I need some help though so here I am.

I am looking to procure a few polish chicks and wan to avoid having them shipped. I'll drive most of the state to get them. Does anyone know of any Polish breeders in the state?

Swap season starts up around March. You may be able to find some at a swap near you. That's where I found the ones that I had. My roo, Nigel, was the sweetest boy ever. He loved to be held and cuddled.

Not a lot of Polish breeders anywhere. Hatchery stock has been disappointing, with a lot of aggression in the cockerels. Shipping is not really very hard on them if you wait until weather is warm.
Thanks for the input.

Unfortunately, I have had chicks get lost in the mail and arrive barely alive. Despite our best efforts, we lost each of them over the subsequent 24 hours. That is not something my wife is willing to risk again. I'm going to need to find them locally somehow.

We have found them to be our favorites. Our Phyllis was a fixture here for years. The friendliest of our hens, she would follow me around the yard whenever I went outside and would come when called. Phyllis even correctly predicted the onset of spring every year!

If you do Facebook, there’s a Polish breeder in Sugarloaf, PA. I don’t think she advertises outside of Facebook tho. Also, I’ve not gotten chickens from her but have seen her around enough to be pretty sure she’s legit.
