blarney, i love the grow out pen, might have to steal some ideas there...are those roost painted tobacco lathes ??and speaking of paint, is it safe to paint inside the coop,,how long you wait to put them in after painting ???

Sally i am also over ran with duckies and plenty more in bators,,,sorry can not help you out on that one....speaking of ducks i seen pics of a duck called a hookbill duck,, they are surely a little different, almost thought about getting some just because they are different and not everyone has them,,and the story with them says they are muted..

hubby bought me 2 large calf hutches, i plan on using these as summer time pens, not sure they will work for winter though,,,,hubby seems to think they would be fine in winter if i put straw bales around the outside....thoughts please..
Pix would help with advice...LOL

Woo HOOOO the pictures loaded! Run is 4 x 8, covered, coop is 3 x 4. there are 2 three foot roosts. No nest boxes are this is a grow out coop. I've got 5 in there now, 2 are bantams. I am going to hang a feeder and water under the coop.

..Blarney that is awesome! alot of work!!...I just wish they would stay that pristine! Are you using Plastic roofing? we purchased that stuff, figuring it will stand up to the elements just as well as metal & not need to be painted or treated in any way.

A fortune I am sure! That is so freakin expensive!
x's 2, not like it's gold plated or anything...

Okay, we had an organizational meeting for the Lebanon Valley Poultry Fanciers. We are going to have another meeting next month to chose officers, by-laws, and even more fun stuff! If anyone is interested in joining please PM me you email address. You can live in any county it is not exclusive, and you can be youth, individual, or family memberships. We are planning on having a show in fall of 2014, and having speakers that are the top of the field pros. I am very excited to belong to this poultry club, you don't have to show your poultry, we are going to try very hard to encompass all aspects of poultry from the backyard egg plucker, to the person breeding to the SOP!
I would love to do this, but I am way out of the area..

..I wonder if there is anything like that around Central PA?

Wing, I don't have my coops insulated, do you want them for chickens or quail? confused as usual, not you me. LOL
I would even bet in the winter you could FIT a bale for them to roost on in there

I don't know much about ducks & winter, but I do know that dogs do just fine w/straw bales...out of the wind, they make "burrows in the bales, curl up & off to sleep. They are fine. When we would go to check on them, we were cold, but they where so warm. I felt bad for bothering them.

Muscovy on the upper left is the father to the mule duck on the lower right.
This muscovy is also the father to the rest of the pictured offspring.
The last picture way on the bottom is of the pair these mule ducks came from.
Mule duck is a female.

A group of five mule ducks. Offspring of Muscovy male x Runner duck female.

Female mule duck.

The above five mule ducks came from the black muscovy drake and the fawn runner duck female.

The females all laid eggs and the males bred actively but we never tried hatching any of the eggs. We no longer have any of these ducks. We really enjoyed them while we had them though.
From what I have read mules where the Muscovy is the father, the female offspring never lay, only when the Muscovy is the mother will a mule lay, but this proves that wrong then! Very pretty mules!!

chicken and duck....he got 2 of them,,,he wants me to use one for duck shelter and one for breeding purposes,,,

Quote: these are not set up yet they are still in the back of the grain truck that was used to pick them up,,,,just wondering how well this will work, since they are just a hard plastic...
I would say if you can block off most of the opening at least at night they should be fine. Fill it with plenty of straw for them to burrow into & ducks can shelter almost any where out of the direct wind. Mine all spent the entire winter in wire cages that I stapled feed sacks around the sides of & draped a towel over the front of at night or during bad storms. I lost a very old drake & a very old hen but they probably wouldn't have survived the winter anywhere except a heated barn. They were so old they were having trouble waddling any more.
