Hi, new to backyard chickens.
I've had some layers for a few years and decided to branch out and put the farm to use.
I am now enjoying being overrun with chickens. I have:
12 layers about 2 months from laying
8 cornish X (temporary)
2 ducklings that think I'm mom
4 Dorkings two hens and two roo's![]()
and 29 assorted chicks of cochin, brahma, dominique, barred rock, and silver laced wyandottes. and one silver laced polish hen.
Going for dual purpose free range/organic and something friendly for my almost 3 year old nephew to be involved with since he loves going down and helping me water, feed, and pitchfork hay.

Oh no, I'm sorry.Lost one of my 2 Silver Laced Wyandottes last night. Went to put everyone in for the night and found her on the ramp in the water trough. She was alive but very weak. Tried to dry her off and warm her up, but she didn't make it through the night.
I'd go with a hypnotist, obviously they think they're ducks or maybe "chicken flippers/fins"Does anyone make chicken life jackets? In the past 4 months I have lost 3 chickens to swimming accidents.
We live on one side of a mountain, it often blocks the weather. We live on top of hill, although a lot of people call it a mountain. (I was born in WY and one sis was born in Denver, it's not a mountain to me lol.) Anyway, there've been many times I could stand outside the house and be perfectly dry but on Rt 11, which runs right past the hill we live on, it was raining so hard I couldn't see the headlights. The one time it was raining on 11, and over the Susquehanna (runs along the otherside of the hill) and it was bone dry at our house. And I thought storms out west were weird...![]()
Nothing wrong with being submissive. We just get what we want in more creative ways. I guess I got the bonus of both sides of the coin. My father enlisted in the Air Force. When I was in kindergarten he finished college and went to Officer Training School. I was brought up to behave like a lady, but know how to have fun like a boy. I am as equally comfortable in a pair of torn jeans and a tshirt as I am in a fancy dress. As comfortable at a hoedown as a coming out ball (and yes, I had one).I get offended when people call me a lady. Ladies are prim, proper & submissive. I'm a woman. A woman has a mind of her own & knows how to use it.I have 3 daughters. They were not raised to be ladies either.![]()

Remember that ag stores will have hatchery birds, so not all of them will have the attributes you are seeing in reviews.I'd love to go but it is not payday till Thursday, being the responsible adults we arewe paid bills and got food lol I was looking at the Barred Rock ones and they look pretty cool and have good reviews on here from what I have been reading. Our local ag store here in Mifflinburg actually has some available for delivery in June, i'd just have to get my order in by Monday - all the other ones I wanted (sussex) were the "rare" kind and I missed the May cut off date for them.
Weather here is so weird to me lol back home in Australia we know it will storm by how hot it is and usually where they will hit as most of them follow a pattern. Then I left Australia and moved to Oklahoma (where hubby is from) and I learnt to get used to tornadoes storms with baseball size hail & earthquakes - THAT was something different all together lol I do miss that weather though
Here it is like you never know what is going to happen lol I always keep a coat in the car just incase lol
I wouldn't get past my chest. I have to keep reminding the kids that the pop door is for the birds, not them! There is more than 1 area of my body that would NEVER fit through a 1x1 opening.![]()
Heck with first few rainstorms, try EVERY time it rains!Thank goodness and that's better than some people who've grown up hereI swear most people forget how to drive in snow and need to relearn, same with the first few rainstorms....
Something I did when we had rear, and do now even with the 4X4s, is put a container in the trunk area (or as close to the rear axle as I can) and fill it with salt and sand bags (although I may buy grit this year). The extra weight helps keep traction, and if I get stuck I have stuff to help with traction. Even with a front wheel I keep one bag premixed in the trunk for traction if I get stuck.![]()
What about the storms we had 4 years ago??? Even my Jeep couldn't get around, and 419 had snow so high that they actually buried cars in it!Gavin decided they're all being named after candies/ice creams since they're Easters, as he calls them. That's what I was thinking. Unfortunately we're overdue for a nasty winter
...I hope I didn't just jinx us with that comment.![]()

That's our cat, she's afraid of the chicks!
