not much of a plant person...I can kill plastic plants..
they don't like alot of water(once planted) and too dry conditions(water if no rain for awhile), & keep the soil acid, like azaleas .....not too much fertilizer, only if they start to get "yellow" leaves. That particular "tree" could take quite a few years to bloom...sometimes years...Good luck!!

My best advice is don't plant it! I can help you properly dispose of it, when should I come? and will there be dinner?

Does anyone else have an insane chicken? I am serious...ginger, was bawk , bawking sooo loud today before she laid her egg...in & out of the coop area. Finally she laid it, she starts "screaming" again, I go out, get the egg out of the coop, I tell she is a "good girl", throw her & Babs some scratch & she shuts -up...???

Is she just nuts or what? She has always acted a little stir crazy before she would lay, but this, this was NUTS!!!& LOUD!!!

I was thinking the same thing!

I read up on your tree, Wing. Deep, Rich, Moist well drained soil. Grows 40-50 feet, gets12 inch fragrant flowers after the threat of frost and Native. The advice for planting is to put it in a spot well protected from the wind. This particular Magnolia has been on my wish list for more than a few years. Where did you get it? Not sure if you know, but they are messy and have no fall color to speak of. I fell in love with this tree for it's bold texture in the summer, the leaves are magnificent. There is one planted a few blocks from where I went to high school.

Quote: I spent a couple of hours helping out at the place where we rent our tobacco shed, they do not farm anymore instead they have huge greenhouses and grow mostly tree's.....they gave me the tree and i did not want to sound stupid and ask all kinds of questions...(these are the kind of people who know all those latin plant names ).....I was telling him I need shade for the chicken run and he thought this would do the job..

here is the link to their nursery,,,, as far as can tell he has been giving these tree's away as gift's for purchasing other tree's.....he was holding an open house at the greenhouses today, and everyone I seen leave with a magnolia tree.

For those of you who send your chickens to "freezer camp" do you do the work yourself? At first I couldn't stand the thought of eating one of my pets but since I seem to be a rooster magnet I've decided to reconsider. I just don't know if I can do it myself. There is a guy a few minutes away that processes deer and he also did my neighbors steer. I wonder if it would be worth it for me to pay him to do my roosters. I'm new to all of this so any info you can give me would be great. Is it better to do it at a certain age?

If I have 1 or 2, I process them myself. Usually, though I have quite a few more and take them to be processed. For me, it's a time factor, since I have a full time job along with a part time soap business in addition to my dogs, chickens. grandkids, etc etc. It takes me quite a while to do just a couple birds. After the time I endured processing a dozen turkeys outside in the November drizzle, I decided that paying for processing is money well spent.
