So tonight we candled the eggs that have been under broody for 10 days, we found 4 out of the 15 that were clear so we removed them leaving her with 11, so fingers crossed they do well! Going to wait until the weekend to candle the silkie and frizzle eggs that are under broody #2 when they are around day 7 or 8.... So excited for babies!!!

Sounds great!

Gracie's eggs started hatching yesterday... on day 20! Brat is ahead of schedule... we gave both her and Pidgy their eggs on Tuesday afternoon, three weeks ago. We were expecting activity starting today... but Radioman came inside yesterday morning at 0600 after checking on the birds and told me one of her eggs was pipped, and he found two wet chicks under her at 430 when he got home, and more pips. Fingers crossed that the rest will have hatched overnight and I'll find some fluffy butts running around in the coop this morning!

The good thing about this is, bird mites & bird lice DO NOT like people. You can't catch them from your birds. They may crawl across your skin while you are handling your birds but they make a fast departure as soon as they figure out you do not have feathers for them to cling to & lay eggs on. They WILL NOT get in your hair like people lice will.

As for treatment (for worms & all bugs-except maybe scaly leg mites) I have found ivermectin to work the best. Bugs are gone within 24 hours. Toss eggs for 2-3 days or just stuff them all in the bator instead of eating them & you are good for at least a month. I treat every bird as they come in & then don't have to treat the whole flock as often. I think the last time I treated everyone at once was October or November. (I got bedding hay from my ex-landlord & it was crawling with mites.) Now I just pick a pen or 2 each month & treat them about every 2-3 month & everyone has been fine.

Thank You! I have Ivermectin on hand, but haven't used it yet. I've been treating with Frontline, and using DE on the chicks.

DH just called, Gracie is up to 5 out of 7 eggs hatched.... Pidgy has at least one pipped. So today should have a few more at least.

Dillon is doing great! He is a clown in typical puppy fashion but listens very well, we have started basic obedience training and words and he is learning well. I'll have to snap some more pics of him with the birds. I corrected him for 'bouncing' around them too much so now mostly he just watches them, when they are in the yard he just trots right through them following Mindy or I around. I was trying to catch one bird who got herself somewhere she wasn't supposed to be. I pinned her to the ground to get a safe hold over her wings and found Dillon snuck in behind me to watch and grabbed her tail and just held it. He didn't pull or tug, just held it. I told him 'no bite' and he let go and looked at me like 'but I thought you wanted it held still???'
I will have to watch his tendancy to help, it is common with the breed, and a good thing usually, but considering his puppiness it needs solid direction!

candled my eggs last night these are growing. great success

Quote: I use .5 ml on adult LF birds, .25ml on adult bantams & LF juveniles, .1 ml on bigger LF chicks & juvenile bantams & just a drop on little chicks. Then I clean out all of the bedding, spray floors & walls with permethrin or Sevin dust & replace with fresh bedding. I never put permethrin or Sevin directly on the birds or where they dust bathe. Within 24-48 hours all crawlies are dead & gone.

We should all go back to horses...hee hee. You funny.

It needs to be said, 'Mites are the WORST'. I feel them crawling on me for DAYS after they're gone. I seriously consider burning the coops down and starting over. arrrrrrgh!!!

Blarney:

I have a powder called 'permethrin'(or something close to it)...I was told it would not affect egg laying and to just dust the birds and to mix in with the pine shavings....

Good Morning all

would that be "sevin"..? I use that for the yard to keep fleas & ticks at bay...also good in the garden if persistant bug problem...only use if plants are NOT fruiting...I try not to use anything on things I'm going to be eating

....but sometimes you have to go there...
