Double laced blue barnvelders.Double Legged Black Bird..........De Love Blue Bird
Quote: Lice & mites won't transfer to people. Salmonella will. Plus, if they are already sick, contact with wild birds will spread whatever they have to the wild birds & then onto anyone else's birds they come in contact with. They are far easier to treat (and prevent the spread of whatever they have) if they are confined so they can be monitored & given proper meds & treatment. Not a good idea to let sick animals, bird or otherwise, run around loose any time. There is always some other animal it can be passed on to.
Right now I only use pine shavings in the coop and run but heard mention of using DE and sweet pdz in addition to the bedding material. What are they used for?
.
Quote: DE is used as a preventative for lice, mites, worms, etc. but will not treat them once they are present. DE is diatomaceous earth & can usually be found in any farm supply store (Tractor Supply, Rural King, etc), often with the poultry supplies. If it isn't there just ask them if they have it.
I've only used the ivermectin & never had to treat more than once with it so no help here, sorry.I used the DE in the bedding and her dust bath area and nest box and dust her with poultry dust, pyrethrum I think? I guess I will re dust in a week and then in another week...Permethrin is the active ingredient in Sevin Dust, which is NOT recommended for use ON poultry. However, if it's the active ingredient in 1 specifically designed for poultry then I would assume whatever was bad for poultry in Sevin Dust is NOT in the Poultry dust.![]()
Quote: Double Laced Barabanter would be my guess, though I have no clue...LOL
Quote: My 2nd guess was something double laced & blue but couldn't think what it might be...LOL
Nice. That totally makes more sense!Double laced blue barnvelders.![]()
Hoarding is when you give up the house to the chickens, and build a coop for yourself. I am one bird shy of that now.![]()
So sorry!GRAR!!! I just lost one of my ducklings to wry neck. I'd been giving her vitamins and she seemed to be doing well....brought them up for their mom time today...and she seemed to have a seizure...so I hade her laying on my chest...when I noticed her head going more and more down to the side...had her die in my hands. So now Frenchy is sitting on my laptop watching me type...I worry how she'll handle being alone in the brooder tonight!
So sorry to hear you lost some chicks... hoping you get your traps set up soon and you don't loose any more!In chicken news, we took a quick 2 night vacation this week. Trying to squeeze it in before the baby goats come. The house sitter left a coop door open and we lost 3 chickens. Whatever was here last week, has established a food source. I'm thinking raccoon. I have ordered the hand traps (thank you! whoever posted the link). and will make yet another attempt at learning to fire the guns.
Did nearly the same thing a number of years ago while doing a construction project... end result was 3 cracked ribs, ugly bruising, sore hip and an impaled nail into my leg about 1.5" or so... but I am still doing construction projects, the end result is worth it!Oh my goodness I need some coffee today but I am happy to announce that we have finally finished converting half of our corn crib into a small coop for my poulets. Put the
ladies in it yesterday and they seem happy.
Now the onlyone who isn't happy is my partner who is mad that I finished it because I am a clutz and I fell through the floor doing it. Stepped on the end of a board I thought I had nailed down already lol
So sorry to hear... we have a 13.5 y/o lab who is failing very rapidly also, so can sympathize with what you are going through. Really wish we could keep them with us longer, it really sucksI think my one dog, Ginger, is coming towards the end. She's not eating her regular food (although she devoured the venison liver and rice), is hardly drinking, not chasing the chickens out of her area, and is limping although I can't find anything wrong with her leg or foot. She's either 11 or 12, I found her 11 years ago along the side of the road and she never left. This sucks...maybe she'll turn around like she has before.
Yep, hubby opens door for ours too...I have one of those...it's called DH! He leaves for work at 6:30 and goes and opens the door before he leaves.
So on the other end of the spectrum, if you freerange, or even have them in a run, what time do they put themselves to bed? Mine have literally been doing it at 7:40 each night....despite the fact that there are still several hours of light left....and DH says they are wide awake when he goes to let them out....so do mine just not understand the concept of light?
Congrats! Can't wait for more fluffy butt pics! The last little one is out. It's almost dried off and it looks blue!!yay!![]()
