Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

We got hit here about 2 hours ago. Ran to do the night feeding & stuffed birds in before they even completed their dinner. Then got totally soaked while trying to stuff baby guineas into the enclosed section of the outdoor brooder because they were stupid & sitting right next to the wire getting soaked with the ducklings. I'm STILL all wet!
my baby guineas went in with most of the chicks, have you noticed, theres always a couple stupid ones that don't go up the ramp into the house with the rest of them, and just stand there cheeping.

Your breed choices are going to depend on what you are wanting from your birds. If you are just wanting interesting pets then bantams would be excellent choices because they require less space & less feed, however, they also give less eggs on average & the eggs are much smaller. If you are wanting them for egg production then any of the layer breeds will work. Birds that are specifically bred for high egg production tend to need to be replaced about every 2 years because they will begin to lose productivity after the 2nd year. Heritage breeds will lay for a longer period consistently but may not lay every single day like the production birds do. So here are the questions you will want to answer before deciding on birds:
1. Do I want eggs or pets or both.
2. Do I want big eggs but higher feed cost, or small eggs & smaller feed cost.
3. Do I want to get new birds every couple of years but have higher output or be able to keep the same birds for 4-5 years with slightly lower output.
4. Do I want fancy birds to show off or functional birds to lay eggs.
wow what a great and thorough answer!
1. I would like some eggs and pets.............I am just one person so I don't need tons of eggs
2. How do small eggs taste? I think small eggs and smaller costs sounds better----but I have no experience
3. Not sure as I am just starting..............guessing keeping the bird for 4-5 years
4. I don't need fancy----but some of the chickens just look plain ole ugly-----I don't want that...............I like the barred rock bantams and the easter eggers .........in appearance and what people say about them............I would like a friendly cuddly chicken............I don't want a noisy chicken as I am not sure how the neighbors will react.

I think generally a fun project , with some not tons-------of eggs, and a friendly pet.................a diversional fun friendly animal to care for----------

I like you are a first timer with chickens, I got 6 barred rocks and they are the cutest lil things ever - 12 days old today. Go with what you want to get, what appeals to you. I am already eyeing off a different breed all together LOL

not chicken related, well, one way, but buying a mini hereford bull, that is, if the lady doesn't change her mind before we can go to pick him up,
need a bull to breed my dexters and since we can't do ai, so cross fingers for me. oh yeah, milk goes with breakfast, ham and eggs lol

AWWWW GEEZ!!! Just called to make an appointment for my meat chickens to be butchered, and my guy retired

Anyone know anyone in the Lebanon area that does it?
How much did you pay? I was just wondering what the going cost is just in case I can't work up the nerve to do it myself.

wow, you're good

lol thanks but not really - got lucky with the timing, out of about 300 shots I got about 4 pics, that was the best one. I wish the 4yr would have stayed in bed, I would have got a ton more as it was darker outside and way easier to see the lightning. Maybe if more storms pop up i'll go out and try and get some more!
