of course the 2 breeds i hoped for good hatches on. Oh well. Hoping the rest make it to lock down and they all come out girls!! LOL

Leaving for Knoebels friday for a week. can't wait! short work week and birthday on thursday are making the days go by fast and I have too much to do before we leave. OK. Good night all!

This may be a silly question, but here goes. When would be the earliest a mallard hen would lay? My only hen has been getting "special" attention from the drakes, and now today she's be awol for about 1/2 the day. I didn't hear her get attacked, and I don't see any feathers anywhere. I was thinking she just flew off somewhere like she has before, but she's always come back before and I have not seen her tonight, which is very off. I know if she were to be laying she'd be hiding herself and the eggs but I think she's too young for that. They were all bought as lil balls of fluff around Easter from TSC.
I guess I should also ask if anyone has mallard or rouen hens they're looking to sell or get rid of? I have a sinking feeling the boys will kill her before I have a chance to process the extra 2, and I guess from what I read even the lone boy could be too much for her.
ETA: Last question: if she flew off to avoid the boys' attention, wouldn't one or more of them have followed her?

Thanks in advance.

Well apparently my duck call sounds like a fawn bleating...I had a doe walk up to about 150 ft away from me while I was trying to call Noisy (Gavin named her) the mallard hen in. Once the doe saw me she stood there trying to decide what to do for a few minutes, then took off as I'm cussing myself for not having the vid camera with me, again

ia am having trouble with roaches in one of my coops, theoretically, the chooks should be eating them...but not so much. Anyone else have this happen?

Are they roaches or those pincher bugs? I get the pincher bugs around the doors and so forth.

So, I am pretty much done with all the rain. My basement has about 5" of water and water came through the outside wall of my home office, ran across the floor and now my family room carpet is soaked. It's still freaking raining! I need French drains but no money for that. Does anyone have an arc I make reservations for?

Hi PA people;
I'm Ann and have posted a few times, but mostly I lurk in the shadows and learn lots from you all!

Wanted to share that a bear and 3(!) cubs came to visit the yard and coop Monday...ran off when my Mom decided they were a little too close for comfort to the kitchen garbage can, which is just inside the screened sliding door. The mom ran off and cubs bolted up the tree when she closed the glass slider. Can't believe I missed seeing them, I was just out there (Madison township/Moscow) last weekend.

To Annie:
Our Charlotte has always been a handful... Her "mean streak" has always been there, very quick to anger and has a very sharp tongue...but is also the cuddly needy one of my girls too... A girl of extremes! But, her feisty nature has come in handy... She had a rough start medically, and came through it great! She also is nearing her black belt now. Her school teachers love her and tell us she is one of the kindest, most helpful kids to her classmates... (For the first couple of years we were sure they were talking about the wrong kid!) So maybe she won't grow out of it exactly, but will vent her frustration where she knows she'll be loved anyway....
And yes, I totally agree with the no nonsense, very consistent parenting...if you say no, mean it, and follow through on every consequence you set for her! Inconsistent parenting plus manipulative (aka smart!) kid equals big troubles all around, and bigger trouble down the road.
Hope you guys don't mind this newbie putting in my 2cents...
Ann

I don't mind at a all! Thank you!!!!

I am changing my goals. I wanted several pens to allow breeding. Now I just want layers and a bachelor pad, and I don't need ten boys.
If anyone is interested in GLW, or barnyard mix (good chance they are EE) males, please let me know. The mixes are stinkin' adorable and are now 5 weeks and 3 weeks old. The GLW are 14 weeks.

Anyone creative enough to make this? That nest box has me stumped.

What is everyone's opinion on the farm show in Harrisburg? I have never been there. What is there to do there and what's it all about? Is it buying livestock and things or what. I am looking into going this year and am curious. Thanks!

The farm show is great! Lots of food, exhibits, horse pulls, cow, sheep, goats, chickens. You can bring your birds to be judged if you have the correct paperwork too!

Sorry to hear that, basements, sub pumps and all that stuff is foreign to us seeing as we don't have any of that in Oklahoma & oil heating was a bigger PIA the tackle lol but our basement does get water in it - not a huge amount but it is still a PIA, ours leaks in 3 different locations all around the basement, we are just lucky that the floor is slightly slanted and it eventually trickles into the sub pump area getting pumped outside.

The aftermath of rain is annoying to clean up, we have the dehumidifier downstairs but it still takes ages for it to fully dry up - so I have to go down and use a spray bottle with bleach in it to stop mold from growning. We are hoping to build 2 rooms down there as we go into winter and my big issue is finding a way to fix the leaks arghhhhhhh

Do you have a wet/dry shopvac you can use to suck up the water and dump it outside?? Hopefully you can find a solution to the problem.

I am SO over the rain, yes we need it & it is great and all but I need to get out and do yard work & I can't cause everything is soaked. As it is I had to let the girls out late cause it was raining and looks like more is coming so I am no doubt going to have to go get them back in their coop soon.

Any one else finally seeing cicadas?? I thought we'd managed to escape the horrible cicada ordeal until I saw some on my plants yesterday grrrrrr & I have been hearing them all in the trees out the back - I am a wuss when it comes to big ugly bugs lol I hope we only get a few and not the swarm I have been hearing about for months!

Hope everyone has a good day!!!
