Where do I buy the Dumor starter grower ......................crumbles.................
can pullets eat mealy worms?

Also I am looking at Fancy Fowl in Lancaster and a place in Collegeville that has pullets.............anyone had any experiences with these two places or can recommend another place I can get pullets like: Easter eggers, marans, gold laced wyandott, New Hampshire red , barred rocks................for example.

I don't give mine meal worms but guess you could but I would worm them. As for the places you are asking about, I don't have any info on them as they are on the other side of the state from me.

I like using Ivomec pour-on for worming: a few drops per chicken. I don't worry about withdrawal time because they use wormers in cancer treatments in humans in combinations with other drugs and by the time it goes through the hen's system it's been refined further. Of course, we don't sell our eggs, either. If we would, I'd abide the legal withdrawal. JMO.
Found the guinea nest yesterday. Put 32 guinea eggs in the incubator today and she still has 9.
DH and I went to the Lebanon small livestock auction last Wednesday evening. Interesting time! Mixed chicks were as low as 25-65 cents ea. We sold some 3 day old guinea chicks for $2.50 ea. Lots of bunnies of all sizes shapes and colors. Lots of hens and roos too. No piggies this week.
We did wonder if that was Chris there down front collecting chickens.

some questions:

1.  which do you prefer:  medicated feeds or non medicated feeds.  This is for me the first time chicken owner ( soon)  . I will likely purchase a few pullets.................so I don't know how old they are yet likely less than 18 weeks...........right.....more like 6 to 8 weeks or so----I am guessing............and they would need the starter food stuff...............but it comes in medicated and non medicated............which do I get and why?

2.  Then I see these organic feed bags...................I am looking at Pickering Valley Feed place in Exton.    Again what do you all recommend.

I am trying to get my supplies together so that when I get my babies ( I mean chickens)   I will have what they need all ready!

lastly I have started to put together what I need to "grow" mealy worms!   

can younger chickens...........like pullets , eat mealy worms?

Day old should have medicated...after the first bag or two it up to you to decide what to feed....most feeds are similar...in protein percentages....feed at tobins (in the list of links I sent you) is a bit cheaper than Pickering.....my experience is that chicks will eat any bugs they can get their beaks on....also, the "chicken" guy at pickering knows his stuff and can help you....and I've bought feed from both....

I don't know the place in collegeville or 'fancy foul' ....my chicks were from pickering...this late in the season,,,,get your day olds soon as you will want them to mature before cold weather and they will need some time in the brooder til they can go outside....feel free to call or PM me to discuss...

BIO, I would be interested in 1 or 2 as well. I live relatively close to My peeps so if you are shipping this way, maybe I can split a shipping cost with her...if that's ok with you Peeps! I have two kids and one of them has asked for one already anyway and you know when you have two kids, they both have to have one! Little brats.

Danielle, I normally put the peeps beak in the water so they know where it is. Iv also scatter a small amount of Feed on the paper towels and they peck at it. They normally eat within a day, frequently less.

I put #3 in with the other two..it is doing just fine with them. They are all about the same size. I showed them all the water..dipped beaks and I had scatter the FF on the towels, it has dried from the lamp, they are pecking at it. The other three eggs, still no pips, but holding out hope

Have a question for anyone with an answer...The chicks were chirping really loud, saw they were away from the(heat) lamp area-to the farthest corner. So, I turned off the lamp. Now they are back to that corner(were the lamp was pointed). The temp in that "spot" WAS 93...NOW down to 90....too hot for them?? the room it self is appro. 85ish ...very warm. Can I keep light(s) off in the room? If they were with Momma, it would be dark right now....That is what I am thinking anyway....is this wrong?

The room is very warm. They are not 'looking' cold/chilled...any and all experience/opinions would be appreciated...Thank you-Danielle

thats how i trained mine, now he doesn't even blink an eye, if i need a brooder, he builds me one, if i need another chicken tractor , he builds me one, and not a peep out of him

it is a very 'comfortable' situation...

there you are......okay, will try the 'box' idea, cause they are liking the dark.. I think the bright light is bothering them...will be getting a different bulb! Yeah, they need the heat...box will be good..okay-doing it now! Thank you ABI

Another option for the heat... since it is so warm right now they won't need much of a supplement. You could try a 60 watt lizard lamp. They are ceramic coils that radiate heat but don't make any light. You just put them in the metal brooder light shell like a regular bulb. They come in a variety of watt ratings for you to choose from. We use one in Gracies broody hut last winter to keep her water from freezing when we didn't want her exposed to light all of the time. Worked like a charm. They are more expensive, but do last a long time, and can really work well to fill the little niche of needing a bit of heat but no light.
Available at about any pet store that sells reptiles, also at places like Petco and other similar large pet stores.
We also used them for our meaties this past spring when they were in the brooder (first 2 wks) They seemed happy with the more natural cycle of light/dark also.

Brinsea makes a heat pad on stands that works well for smaller numbers of chicks, the leg stands can adjust up a bit... when they are cold they go under, when not they just hang out elsewhere in the brooder. It is probably available from other companies also, but I am familiar with the Brinsea one so mentioned it first.
