Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

Kitten, ie Sweet pea, is making great progress. She is able to walk around in her cage little more normally (totally amazes me). She has the best personality. Even through the pain she went through she never scratched, bit, or hissed at anyone.

Our birds have decreased in laying in the heat and i am also seeing more feathers laying around.

Our garden is giving us a bumper crop this year. We have more squash, zucchini, and starting to get more tomatoes than we can keep up with. But more so with the squash and zucchini. Our pumpkins are growing huge and there are at least 6 on the vines. I think we planted 6-8 pumpkin vines. Watermelon is growing but not producing yet. Oh peppers are the biggest i have ever seen and they still have not changed color yet.

Um, ok i think that is all for now lol..

Wing. Sounds like you're really making some progress on your meaties. I'll have to pay you a visit when we're ready to go down that road.

Sharron, I've heard that the Marans meat is tastier too.

Lisa, I read on the Orpington thread, where a lot of breeders are down south and battling major bugs this season with all the moisture to hang a dryer sheet in the coops. They are especially wary of mosquitoes spreading disease. I routinely sprinkle muddy runs, and spent nasty hog areas with lime to combat the flies. DE too. We are rubbing the goats down with dryer sheets to ward off the horse flies. Not sure if it works, but I figure it can't hurt, and they do smell better

Goat pics? Of course!

dryer sheets................who knew--------------and I wonder why? I am guessing the flies just don't like the smell of the dryer sheets?

I have seen things about pine sol -------------as a deterrent for flies.............has anyone ever tried that?

my coop is not that big.................I could hang a fly strip but the chickens might peck at it....................is that gonna be a problem?

re: the suggestion about sugar water soda bottle..............I imagine the flies go to the sugar water and then get trapped down there and cant get out.................and die...........is that it?

I am a little worried about having a fly problem!

This may be a silly question, but what are the red or iridescent patches of skin just behind the ear called? I've called them cheeks but I was wondering if there's a proper term. I just noticed they're much more notable on the girls have larger and redder wattles and combs. Are they a indicator of maturity/eggs?

That's the idea. It's also good for wasp and bees, according to what I read/heard. We don't drink soda, and I'm freezing the milk jugs for the birds and dogs, so I haven't tried it yet.
I wouldn't have thought that given how low they are...then again my brain ain't working the best with the heat.

Got some pics to share:

This is how Copper normally sits. I finally got a pic of him doing it, usually he bolts when I get close enough to try.

Not sure what is going on this year, I have never had predators to the point that they are this year..

Our neighbor made round bales out of our field last week. The other day, I looked out to find a pair of foxes playing king of the hill on one of them. Sadly, they were out of range and got away.

omg...my little roo has begun his mission.....well, a couple of the more senior girls have decided to play 'cock blocker' and won't let the boy near the girls he's already covered....pretty funny....he tried twice today and was chased of by a pair of the big girls....is this normal behavior???

Western PA in the 'Burgh'..go Steelers! Looking for a few Orpington girls. I have two Buffs & will be getting 1 or 2 more in the fall but would love another 1 or 2 of any other color. Anyone within a 40 mile radius that has any of those chickens to sell, gimme a shout. Not looking for small chicks, like them to be around 4-5 months old if possible. Very new to this chicken farming but enjoying it so far. Got our first egg yesterday but none today, guess they are a little sporadic when they are first getting started. Thanks.
