Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

HI Lorus, we're practically neighbors...I'm from the Burgh..bought my car at Diehl's so I come up to your area for service on it. Anyway, welcome, I'm a new chicken mommy & this is such an informative site, it'll be a big help to you. I'll be going to your Fair next month to see the chickens. How many & what type of chickens will you be getting?

Hello Vicki! We are starting out with 4 chickens. We are purchasing from a breeder not too far from here, and our current plan is to get Bredas. My son is the chicken lover here - so he is liable to fall in love with a few of the others she has available - so who knows where we will end up!
This is a great site! I am learning so much!

Somehow, someway the dog got fleas (I may need to switch flea products, but that is another issue). They aren't "bad" but I definitely need to get rid of them! An article in "Mother Earth News" said to sprinkle the carpets with DE, and work in with a broom. Knowing that DE will dry out my hands, what do I do about my feet? I seriously hate slippers, and even socks are annoying. Not to mention, I would think it would come through the socks. The dog will get it all over the furniture and my bed.
Anyone know how smart this is, and /or can you give me some clue as to how to do this? Like how long, and how to keep safe.

I have been using dawn dish soap and a sprayer in my house to kill fleas. It works but takes repeated applications to get rid of them. Never used the de in the house. I would be leary of that too...

Hatching a single chick IS bad for chicken math. Came home with a heritage RIR and a Bresse. Also found a 12 week old blue Breda pullet just wandering along the road so of course it came home too.... That's my story and I am sticking to it!!!

LOL!! Just wandering along the edge of the road!! My hen does that, better watch you don't snatch her up!!!

My silkie hen loves to mess with me. She will sit in her nest all day and just when I think she is broody she will get up and sleep with the rest of the chickens. Tonight she was still in her nest! I'm going to wait a few more days just to make sure and then I will slip her some eggs. Fingers crossed! Maybe I don't have the only non broody silkie!

Morning all!! Hopefully this rain will stop for a while, the girls got caught out yesterday and stupid me ran out to try and get them in the coop - needless to say I was soaked from head to foot!! lol Well I go to the gas station this morning to grab a drink and something told me to go look at the local newspaper - which i never do - glad I did now!! It happened just down the road from where we live - I called hubby this morning and told him about it - he said we are going to get a shotgun. It worries me stuff like that happening so close with hubby away all the time for work and just me and the kiddo here

There are news stories of kids scaring off intruders with Cricketts (.22 single shot) most robbers don't want any resistance. First sign of it and they usually flee, especially armed resistance.
This is why everyone should own and know how to use a gun......wish they would not have printed that the gun was not loadedi
I agree 100% with both statements. Not to leave out men (I'm teaching Gavin to shot responsibly), but all women should know. We're more likely to be attacked, and have our homes invaded. Besides women could own guns before they could own land, vote or run for office in this country. They were expected to protect the property while the men were working, hunting, etc. if the didn't have servants or farm/ranch hands.
I have 4 50 pound bags of medicated chick starter for sale from L & K mills. I over bought and want to get my money back out of it. Just purchased a week ago. It is 20% protein. $12 a bag. I am located in Swiftwater.
Could ya hold on to it for about a week? I can pick it up or meet ya at L & K, I'll be going up for more grower 16% next week.

Lol, awe so cute. So sorry to read bout the other ones.

I washed Sturgis in Dawn a few hours ago. No sign of flea bites on him. I am hoping it was just from laying outside (I know neighbor animals have fleas) and the Frontline just hadn't killed them yet.
I will get flea collars tomorrow if I see anymore.
I hope to find the proper way to use DE in the house. Thank you for the responses.

I am about 1 and 1/2 hours from the mill. I am by Tannersville, by Camelback, the Crossings, inbetween Stroudsburgh and Mt. Pocono. We drive out to the mills because it's cheaper than TSC. Wish there was a mill closer to me, haven't found one that's less than 1 hour away. I buy alot at at time, months supply so I don't have to go every week.
