Well, I just got back from the swap at TSC and I have to say, I was very disappointed. Every bird I was interested in had mites! A lot of the, did not look well cared for. My wife says that it seems to her that I just take such great care of mine that I probably have too high of expectations from other people's chickens. I talked to a guy about his silkies and he said they were his breeders from last year and were $6.00 each. He had hens and roo's. I looked them over and they were crawling with mites. When I pointed it out, he said all chickens have mites. Mine don't! If mine had mites, I would treat the, immediately and would not be out there selling the, until they were clear. I didn't look at every chicken at the swap but the ones I did look at closely, didn't look healthy. I'm really disappointed.

$30??? Seriously? The winter coveralls? Ooohhhh snap! I will be at my local TSC tomorrow for the swap so I will be looking for clearance items! Thanks for the heads up Tweetr!
Yeah they were the waterproof ones - i'll be going back on thursday as they had a bunch of other stuff I was interested on clearance but alas not enough $$ to go nuts lol
We had a great time too! I promise we'll be gone much earlier next time lol.

lol ok

I'll need to see if they have any kid's sizes at ours. Gavin's gonna need a new snowsuit this year, he finally outgrew his.

Cute pic, worst part is the second the boys laid a hand on that truck, the girls were off in another direction lol. I wouldn't be surprised if you said the girls were peaking out to be sure the boys weren't waiting for them to leave the coop this morning lol.

hahaha no kidding

well that would certainly put me off buying them - some people probably don't care but if I were to get chickens, i'd appreciate them being lice free as they would just be something i'd have to spend more money on getting rid of!

I didn't see you! I crept on your Facebook page in your signature to see what you looked like, and I didn't see you anywhere! I was the girl with the red tshirt and ponytail. I had a little sebright roo for sale! :)

Your welcome! I also wanted to tell you that B vitamins are water soluble, so they shouldn't overdose. Another deficiancy that is popular in chicks is vitamin E. For that I would use the save-a-chick. The vitamin is fat soluble. So they can OD on it. Just some friendly FYIs! Let us know how they do!
The one chick got a little better after she got the vitamins I gave, but still has problems walking. What dose would you suggest for the E vitamins if I give them, and should I give B and E to all the chicks or just the one with problematic legs? I think she may have been born with the deficiency if it is B, because apparently they die around day 17 and she is day 13 and showing symptoms of struggling.

I'm glad you posted this. When I see something that I like I tend to get wrapped up in my excitement and forget to check for things like that. I just assume that everyone is as honest as I am. This also scares me away from swaps. Maybe I will stick to hatching out the breeds that I want. When I get my goat I'm not sure of what to look for when picking out a healthy one. Hopefully I can find a honest breeder.

Hello everyone!

Today is suppose to be coop cleaning day but I have a sick baby and no motivation. The 2 older kids spent the night at Gram & Paps we got up early to go to the flea market. So much easier with only one child so I was excited. 30 minutes into the ride and my little one vomited EVERYWHERE! Ugh. Poor baby. We pulled over and I cleaned her up and the carseat as best I could. Needless to say we had to turn around and go home so no flea market. She is napping now. Hopefully it was a one time thing. Yesterday was our family reunion. Hopefully we didn't get anyone else sick with this bug. I got to see family I haven't see in over 15 years. It rained the first half of the day but the sun finally peeked out in the late afternoon.

I'm hoping I can at least make my fermented feed today. I read so many threads and websites on this topic my head is spinning! Some people say they add things like sunflower seeds, garlic, oregano, cayenne pepper, but they didn't say what the benefit is to adding these things. Anyone know? I also read that you can keep adding feed when you take feed out. I'm just worried that it will go bad at some point. So much to learn! I'm going to start with a small batch before I dive in and do a huge 5 gallon bucket. I would hate to mess up that much feed.

Hello to all the new people! Get well to all the sick chicks!

Wow, really!? Some people might not care if there are mites or lice but I sure as heck do. I'm not as interested in going to one at our TSC now. I might still go but I won't bring any of my birds until I've seen how the health of the other birds is.

There were a handful of goats there but alas, my wife still won't go for it. I don't know anything about goats so I don't know if they were healthy or not. The looked healthy to me. I was excited at he prospect of getting a silkie but I wasn't jumping into it without a thorough inspection. I'm glad I did.
