Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

BirdbyGavin it was very nice to meet you and Gavin yesterday. I started some ff with the feed today.

Busy day, cleaned out 2 very muddy, nasty smelling runs. Wheelbarrows and Pocono Mountain rocks make it hard to work. Big rocks that are apart of mountain don't make it easy for me to control the wheelbarrow. Very tired after that work!

Found a little egg in the run. I think one of my golden laced wyandottes must have started to lay. Woo hoo, does the happy dance!! I can't wait till all my young hens start to lay!
It was nice meeting you too and congrats on the egg! I'm hoping we get some eggs soon, more of the girls are squatting when go to pick them up. I have Gavin checking anywhere I can't get to anymore, so almost everywhere the chickens love to go during the day.

Thank you for the all info.and potential remedies !!
picked up a bunch of things..tending to them every half hour. making sure they are eating the NEW food and getting the vitamins and electrolytes in them. I am going with the idea that the food was inadequate..a theory that was shared by a few at the animal store also, but at the same time covering a possible cocci- issue. So as it stands I am doing all things possible for them. Will keep posted. Now going to try to get some pickles put up today...no rest for the wicked I suppose. Have a good one all-Danielle

How are your babies doing?

Thanks for the welcome everyone. Maybe some of you can tell me where I can find a breeder locally in south central Pa. I'm looking for Heritage Barred rocks and Rhode Island Reds. We had both those breeds when I was young. Everything I have read is that the breeders have better birds than hatcheries. Can anyone tell me if that's true?

Just got a text message from Seth. His cell was shut off while he was in Kuwait, so that means he's stateside!!!!

It'll still be a few weeks to a month til he's here at home but I'm so flipping happy he's back on U.S. soil! Now I just need to get the house ready...
Should I warn him how chicken math has taken over????

Now not a dime of his money has gone into them so I shouldn't be in too much trouble. Right?!

Yaaaaay!!!!!! Welcome countryboy Sorry for your loss Border

We are going to start incubating our eggs unless one of our hens suddenly becomes broody. Which is very unlikely. Only 19 weeks, but our rooster is a speckled Sussex. Pullets are 3 leghorns 3 red sex links and 1 speckled Sussex. Besides the speckled Sussex any idea what the outcome will be like?

Well, I just got back from the swap at TSC and I have to say, I was very disappointed. Every bird I was interested in had mites! A lot of the, did not look well cared for. My wife says that it seems to her that I just take such great care of mine that I probably have too high of expectations from other people's chickens. I talked to a guy about his silkies and he said they were his breeders from last year and were $6.00 each. He had hens and roo's. I looked them over and they were crawling with mites. When I pointed it out, he said all chickens have mites. Mine don't! If mine had mites, I would treat the, immediately and would not be out there selling the, until they were clear. I didn't look at every chicken at the swap but the ones I did look at closely, didn't look healthy. I'm really disappointed.

This is a typical senairio unfortunately. No all swaps, but most of them.
