Yay!!!! Fun isn't it, betty laid her 10th egg this morning & they are slowly getting bigger. wait till you.crack it, I was amazed how much thicker the shells are compared to store bought eggs!

I don't eat eggs but I made hubby some of bettys eggs this morning and the smile on his face said it all lol he then said no more store bought eggs hahaha

Sorry to be such a downer lately but I seem to be losing chickens daily. Last night a raccoon was able to dig under the run and pulled one of my leghorns half way out. My hubby found her this morning. At this rate I won't have any chickens left. The door to the coop is open so they can go in and out but starting tonight I will put a door on while they sleep until the new coop is done or hubby can fix this one. I'm sick about all of this. Still not sure what was getting the ones during the day but this one definitely looks like a coon. Until I can get a trap I'm going to leave a special treat out at night just for him.

Got off the phone with DH. He thinks I should have let the BR brood a dozen eggs, and that I should keep all the chickens I currently have. Even reminding him that I will turn part of the garage into a coop is not enough to scare him. Maybe he knows I would protect the Harley from chicken poo, and that is all he cares about?

Psssh!! Mine cleaned out the ENTIRE Barn and offered to section off more areas so I can have more chickens, possibly a goat, at least I know if one appeared he wouldn't say no to it!! Ha! Not sure what happened with that considering he said, Don;t you have enough chickens, when will this stop?!? lol

Need an opinion...strange thing happened tonight. The whole broody chicken thing is new to me so maybe I am just hopeful. When I went to close the coops tonight, one of my leghorns was all fluffed up in the nest box sitting on a golf ball. She was very upset about me checking under her for an egg. It was so weird that she was even in the box so late. Anyway, has anyone ever heard of a leghorn going broody? I know I could just walk my lazy butt up to the coop right now and see if she is still there but that's not going to happen. I guess I will see in the morning.

I've heard of Banty LH going broody but not a standard.

My one will show every sign of broodiness and basically scream "i'm broody, i'm broody!!!" And makes a big production to take a chunk out of anyone that gets near the nest, turns the eggs, puffs up, pulls her feathers out, and coos to the eggs. Usually about 8 hours later she decides she isn't broody anymore. She does it about once every two weeks. It's so funny.

I'd wait for a few days to make sure before you put real eggs under her.

You're complaining that you can have more chickens? My problem is being allowed more!!
