Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

Yep that is there run, I don't hose that out at all, the rain cleans it, great drainage. I may sprinkle PZD, stall freshener sometimes. and then they get grass clippings from the lawn. the only thing I change over is in the coop, I had sand and that was nice to keep them cool in summer, I just change the e coop back to straw to keep them warmer for winter.

nice ! Let mother nature do the work!! , that PZD is some good stuff, glad I use it! ...Question..for anyone really...I was wondering, since I have sand already in the coop/run area. Could I keep the sand in the coop are ( really good/easy for clean up). and put something over it, like straw or some other type of bedding? Right now I use Paper shreds in their nest boxes. Very easy to get rid of! I don't want to change things out every season, Just want them to have something to 'burrow/settle down" into over the colder months. I know they can handle the cold, that is what they are breed for...I like to be over protective 'mommy' sometimes.

LF is large fowl, they obviously need more space than a bantam. The larger the fowl...the more space...so a Langashan needs more than say a Speckled Sussex (SS)

My girls and boys have a 12x16 cinderblock coop. Yeah, lucky birds. There run (not that anyone but the ducks stay in it) is 15x20, 50x70. It's a long narrow section, then a big squareish. They honestly have free run of our 3 acres and the neighbor's 1 1/2.

I deep litter in the winter, adding insulation that way.

Question 1- Do I have to have my nest box off of the floor? I built mine on the floor with a slanted "roof" so they don't roost on top.
Question 2- what does everyone put in the nest box. I have the TSC wood chips in four. Husband said I needed straw. So Two have straw. The hens keep kicking out the chips and straw!

Any suggestions....

Mine is actually an old bookcase. We put boards across the front of the shelves, and it was already divided in 3 sections, so they have 6 nest boxes. Now for the odd part. I put wood shavings in all of the boxes. They kick the shavings out of the top 3 and lay right on the bare wood. In the bottom 3, they pile the shavings deep, and bury the eggs..... I figure they're gonna do what they want to do and leave it to them.

Thanks for the clarification!

thanks ----I have seen the feed sacks on the inside walls and I may do that........................just for fun I was thinking of using outdoor fabric outside the windows to beautify ( hopefully) the coop

If its really rainy or sleet and ice................I could staple some clear plastic too................

Now you know this "hobby" is getting to be more like an obsession! I do have a full time job and

a house whose indoor cleaning is been on hold as I play with chickens!

The first step to help is admitting you have a problem. ...or was that the first step is admitting YOU are the problem...hahahha, that is the one I keep forgetting!!

FWIW, check on the side of the pallets for a brand or burn of "HT".... Some pallets are cheap, raw wood and wouldn't be a problem. However, others have treated wood. My organic gardener advised on HT if you can get them because they are heat treated and have less/ none of the chemicals that might adversely affect your birds. Good luck!

Look at Building supply companys....my mom works for a kitchen and bath center and when they get kitchens or bath tbs in they are in reg. pallets and some even have like 2x4's in them... where are you located?
