Question 1- Do I have to have my nest box off of the floor? I built mine on the floor with a slanted "roof" so they don't roost on top.
Question 2- what does everyone put in the nest box. I have the TSC wood chips in four. Husband said I needed straw. So Two have straw. The hens keep kicking out the chips and straw!

Any suggestions....

Howdy from Chester Co....where you from and what do you have???

regarding bedding ....I am currently using pine shavings....they are about the same cost as straw....(make sure if you decide, get straw not hay...otherwise the birds will want to peck through it...yuck)...I may opt to use double shredded oak leaves (I have so many) or somebody mentioned using shredded newspaper....I think the method is to add a couple of inches and every week or so in the winter just add another layer on top when it gets ugly...then major cleanout in the spring...

If anybody wants please comment,,,,this is my first winter....so I am not the authority.....

I use leaves only when I know they are dry, and I mainly do it because the birds will occupy themselves for days just scratching thru those leaves...be careful of wet spots with the leaves they will get moldy quickly..since I use straw the leaves will just mix in over the winter...I have never added heat just close up some of the drafts..

I use pine shavings and shredded newspaper. I put spent hay (read: mischievous goats have knocked out of their feeder and won't eat what's on the ground) and leaves in their run (not coop!) especially in the winter, this keeps them occupied and gives them a little variation.

And....we have chicks hatching! Woo hoo! Pics when I get home.

I plan to bag some leaves when they start falling this year and then dump a bag of leaves in the run periodically in the winter for warmth and something fun to do. I hope the leaves will stay pretty dry in the bags..................I imagine if they go in dry they should be alright.

I now have clear plastic to staple over the hardware cloth windows..............and fabric for some windows to just reduce wind but allow air.

I will try to staple the plastic feed bags on the inside to reduce drafts in the many cracks in the walls I have!

I am wondering about putting hay or straw UNDER My coop to help with warmth because I imagine lots of mice etc might live there............what do you all think about straw under the coop?

Hello everyone! Been a crazy summer... And not at all on much...
I was wondering if anyone was interested in a free EE pullet? She is 4 months old... I just don't have the space for her at all. She was going to be living with my silkies, but she has decided she doesn't like them at all. And my wyandottes don't like her. :-( I can't keep her alone, it isn't really very nice for her, and I am out of houses to put er in. Anyone interested? Located in the poconos.

Wing, I set 12 Banty Cochins for ya, 6 were clear on Thursday's candling. Then, I had an incubator malfunction and had to move the viable 6 under a broody.

I think only 1 is going to hatch of the 3 banty eggs you gave, she piped and stopped, think I will keep what hatch... bunch if enablers here! Lol time to add on to the coop/run

I think its going to be a she, getting feathers fast, I wasnt watching my humidity during incubation and they all died out before they broke the air sacks, but this one and I did help her by putting a pin hole in the shell, I could hear squeeking but there was no pipping spot and I was determend I wasnt going to hatch an egg,

I didnt have anything under my coop last winter and it seemed fine, I used wood chips and straw kinda mixed deep inside and they dig in it and fluffed it the way they all like to and stayed warm, but this year I have a bunch of feed bags Im going to staple onto the walls to close up drafts, thats a good idea!
