Shut the front door! They are so stinkin' cute! I am jealous!

I plan to bag some leaves when they start falling this year and then dump a bag of leaves in the run periodically in the winter for warmth and something fun to do. I hope the leaves will stay pretty dry in the bags..................I imagine if they go in dry they should be alright.

I now have clear plastic to staple over the hardware cloth windows..............and fabric for some windows to just reduce wind but allow air.

I will try to staple the plastic feed bags on the inside to reduce drafts in the many cracks in the walls I have!

I am wondering about putting hay or straw UNDER My coop to help with warmth because I imagine lots of mice etc might live there............what do you all think about straw under the coop?

Use caulking in the cracks.. works fantastic and helps keeps bees out from making nests. And I wouldnt put the straw under for the simple reason it may intrigue some predators to take up home under there such as rats and rats can kill your birds! I put tarps that I cut to to window size in my pheasant cage and just store them in the warm months to re use. I cut the tarps for the chicken wire sides that face the wind and help keep snow out of the 'run' because the winds blow it so badly even though the whole thing is roofed. I am having my first winter with the ducks in the 'normal' run and unsure what to do. I am debating that under the dog pens (they are raised in the coop part off the ground and the ducks love it) to put straw and lots of it. We have a piece of plexi that I want to adhere to the side to have as a wind block but allow for a window and the plexi was free. I just have to figure out what id going on with the other door on the pen.. its is 3/4 screen... my dad isnt sure if we are going to keep that door or if his buddy if going to get him another one that he spoke of. I know More the merrier when it comes to bedding! And I was told that for PA 6-8 inches of bedding is needed to keep birds warm in the winter.. can;t remember where I read that but I went by that last year and worked fine :)

Hey:

I have a couple of questions about chicken behavior...

1. One of my baby marans refuses to go into the coop at night....I usually guide her and she will then run into the pen....on the occasions when I am not there when the flock is settling in, she will decide to roost on the the edge of the pen's fencing where it attaches to the coop....I thought as she became more integrated with the flock she would just follow the roo into the pen....thats not happening....will cold nights impress her to go into the coop or am I going to have to manually put her in the coop every night?

2. I have a broody girl who has been sitting on 4 eggs for about 13 days....two day ago she came out of the pen for a break and had the shell of one of her eggs in her mouth...when I checked the egg it was a fertile egg and had partially developed...did she whack the egg cause she felt something was wrong or was is just an accident(she laid the egg and some of her eggs are thin shelled)?

3. in another week I may have a chick or two hatching....do I need to remove mom and kids to a separate locale? Or should I just position some chick food and water near her nesting box...she is one of the more dominant birds in my flock...and I don't know how the changing weather will affect things....?

Thanks for any advise!!!!!

Hiya Stake

1). Sorry your Roo isn't able to convince your Marans to come in. I have a group of 9 who sleep outside the coop every night. I don't know why, and they will stay out there no matter the weather ie. Irene. If you can NOT convince her to go in, make her safe where she is.

2). I can't see a broody eating one of her eggs, but stranger things have happened.

3). I choose to move my Broodys and their babies, but many people leave them in the main coop. Moving a first time broody can be tricky. I wouldn't worry about the upcoming weather, I've had Broodys hatch in November with NO problems.
