Stake your two week olds look big and beautiful!

I have a quick question. My 16 week RIR 'girl' is getting a green sheen on her wings. Very small comb and wattles. Do the green feather automatically mean roo?

RB:

Small combs = girl by my understanding..My BCmarans have a green sheen to their black color and I have heard Jersey Giants have a purple or green sheen to their black feathers...I think really dark colored feathers do this....my two cents, I'm no authority....

PS: I wish the little tykes would get a bit bigger and not fit through the chain link fence...mama sits on one side of the fence and is sending the babies under the neighbor's brush next to the fence...(it is alot more protected)...and I did have a small hawk come in this morning and made a pass...I heard the alert and ran out...to see it fly off empty handed...it targeted one of my big girls who was by herself....did a head count and couldn't find the babies for a few minutes...they went to the middle of the neighbor's thicket and were absolutely still for 5 mins...had to coax them out with scratch....

Awh poor babies!
I have had a LOT of hawks in my area lately. I think I only notice it this year because I have chickens, but is it usually worse in the fall? I know about the migration but I thought that was over.

I've got a pair of Black Jersey Giant chicks in the brooder right now, and they're starting to show a greenish sheen to thier feathers. Both of our black Langshans show the same tint.

I'm starting to worry about one of the Jersey Giants though. 'She' is standing more upright than her sib, and at a bit more than a month has a noticeably larger comb. I'd like some opinions on the whole roo/hen situation, and I'll try to get some pictures to post when I get home today.

Anyone on the thread keep Jersey Giants?

Don't know about that but I knew my oldAustralorp boy was a boy at about 5 weeks. At that age, his feathers looked bright green when compared to my female because she did not have that sheen at all at that age- she barely does now at 16 weeks old.

Yep, we have 6 of them, or at least we have the Mt Healthy hatchery version of them (Black Giants). They are 7 months and are so black they glow greenish blue in the sun! I think most of the true black birds do that... hen or too. Our Australorp too is absolutely gorgeous in the sun!
