I just built the pens, but I've been using the cages for almost a year. I have adults in them at all times. I will be using my other coops outside for growing out birds this coming year. My cages are 22 1/2" x 70 1/2". Oh, I mainly have bantams, so they are good for about 4-5 birds each cage. I don't like putting more than 4 in them. I have the LFs outside in another coop. I could put LFs in the pens, though.

Do you need to supplement vits for them? because they dont get out in the sun?

I was going to add a multi vit pack I found on Jefferslivestock and put in feed.

do you know the area they have? what is best for a trio floor size wise? and does caging like that have any effects on mating? Thanks for your help!! Maybe I dont need to keep going as large scale as I have been. sure would be less hassle to have less runs and slop!
 
During warm months and good weather the garage door is open on the shed, so I will only have to worry about these winter months with the lack of sun. I didn't have the pens in the back this spring/summer/fall, so the birds in the cages got plenty of light. I still have 3 windows to put in the south facing side of the shed. I didn't get there before it got cold.

The birds in my cages have nearly 12sq feet. I like to stick with a 2sq ft per bantam rule and a 4 sq ft for LFs. The cages are only about 22" high, so I would never put a LF bird (I have Ameraucanas - small LFs!) in them unless I absolutely had to (injury, sick, conditioning, ect.). A trio of LF should have at least 12sq foot and bantams should have at least 6sq foot. I really like to have an extra bird or two's worth of square footage, though.

I haven't had any issues with breeding in the cages - no more than normal with the Cochins since I have to pluck their butts.

Hi Guys!!

I need some more help for this girl. She has been inside since last tuesday away from the flock. She looks okay (not see anything wrong with her eyes, nose, legs ect.) She has been eating and drinking fine. I have also been giving her vits that was suggested on here....She still actd like she cant blance herself and then she will just flop over and stay there like in the picture below...She does feel skinner then before......Is there anything else I can try or does she just need to go to the big field in the sky....Help please!!!

I would guess mareks or a neurological issue. I've had 3 do this in the past 2 yrs. I give gatorade mixed with brown sugar for 24 hours. If no improvement at that time I cull. 1 perked right back up & is doing fine. Think she just got squished by scaredy birds during a thunder storm. The other 2 got worse instead of better & wete culled to make sure it wasn't something contagious.
 
So the other day i heard a loud commotion outside and at frst i thought it was a delivery driver. When i looked out i could see feathers flying. Sent my fiance out to check, when she opened the door a hawk flew off of one of my chickens. My hen was laying there with a big gash in her neck. I got herin an isolation pen and she is doing really well now. But i just got tols thia morning thaty sistwr saw the hawk attcky cat now too. Anyone have any ideas how to get rid of this nuisance?? I have most of my bird cooped but i let a handful of the chickens and guineas free range yet because they prefer it.

oh my..i'm so sorry Brittany!! It does unfortunately look/sound like something neuro. , i am not a vet & just a newbie at best with this stuff. I don't have much to offer that others haven't already..with the vits./and such....the ending of your animal is ultimately your judgement. We are here to support you either way.
