Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

So the other day i heard a loud commotion outside and at frst i thought it was a delivery driver. When i looked out i could see feathers flying. Sent my fiance out to check, when she opened the door a hawk flew off of one of my chickens. My hen was laying there with a big gash in her neck. I got herin an isolation pen and she is doing really well now. But i just got tols thia morning thaty sistwr saw the hawk attcky cat now too. Anyone have any ideas how to get rid of this nuisance?? I have most of my bird cooped but i let a handful of the chickens and guineas free range yet because they prefer it.

Indy:

I lost three baby chicks to hawks just a few weeks ago...and am beginning the process of hawk proofing my yard....first, its highly illegal to shoot them....also, if your area is good habitat for hawks, another will move right in...(hence is you go to war it will never end)....I have hung CDs from trees as distractions(didn't really work)...I think the best solution is to make sure you have thickets of bushes for the chooks to hang in. I am going with English laurel and blackberries....I have also herd of folks making four legs out of a 2X4 and creating a platform out of a 4X8 plywood....the chooks just run under it if a hawk comes around...lastly Troyer mentioned a bird he had "Ganoi" that were real alert about hawks(about 100 posts back)...about the only thing to make a hawk move on is a bigger hawk...you may have some success if you have a dog out with you chooks....my two cents....good luck....

Had a crazy dream last night.

In the dream, I opened the coop door at night to check on everyone and saw an extremely bloody carcass of a bantam leghorn. I said "What in the world?" and Miriam, my ameraucana, said to me (in a manly, smokerish voice) "It was here when we came to bed, so we killed it." Oooookay.

I need to stop eating junk before bed. :/

Have you ever checked out the "webbing" idea that "ThedragonLady" has? She is mostly on the English Oprs./Pics of Orps thread. I am not aware of the area you have, but this concept has been modified to greater and smaller yards. Just throwing that out there...not sure how much "work" you want/willing to put into "anti-hawk-predation."...sorry for your loss..can't even imagine seeing that.

Thanks guys...I will try the brown sugar mix today when I get home into tomorrow. She hasnt gotten worse she has just stayed the same....Shes been away from the flock since everyone else seems to be fine. I will keep an eye on them! And I dont have away to get blood or get it to the lab...Our pup had to have blood work done and it cost us well over 100 to do it. I dont really have that kinda money to spend on a chicken. I know they are a pet and I care for them all but I just dont. Not with christmas and the pups right now. :(

Hey:

Folks in the SE...ever hear of these guys....http://philadelphia.craigslist.org/grd/4221518705.html

I've seen that posting on CL for months but never contacted them, and I live real close by (Pottstown). If you do, let me know what you think.

Ditto. I'm curious about them too, but have not contacted them. I was thinking this spring when I could actually make a purchase. stake if you get there first, I'd really like to hear what you think.

hi all----I spoke with the folks in Collegeville on the phone when I was getting my birds. They were very nice and seemed knowledgeable.

I ended up getting my girls in Lancaster county.......but would consider Collegeville group readily again.

I was not at their site........but I got a very favorable impression in the interactions I had ............
