Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

Thanks Blarney (& everyone else who commented on my new house). We are headed there in the morning to paint & lay carpet before we move in...which will save us all but $100 of the first payment. It has a 2 story shed sitting on a bank so as to let both levels open out at ground level. Goats & waterfowl will be going into the bottom. Chickens & turkeys go upstairs. I may have room to put the turkeys or banties downstairs instead since I cut the flock in half today. 50 birds sold, 57 to make pens for at the new house.

Congrats on the successful auction! Good luck on the move... I'm sure you all will be glad to be settled again.

Oh great, winter storm watch just popped up on my phone. 3-7" thurs afternoon/evening.

they are calling for -15 to -25 with the wind chill on Friday...we are going to have a 20-30 mph wind here, with the temps. being 10* for a high(daytime)..Three days are going to be really bad with the temperatures like this...
should I do more for the birds?...I know they are very cold hardy, but man!!! They have plenty of ventilation...they are pretty protected from the wind-itself...

the coop is surrounded by the wall, 98% of the wind comes from behind..so they are good there. Should I put anything in thee with them? I think maybe some straw..then I think BUGS!..(*.I use sand for litter)
I have feed bags..i think i am going to be putting them on the outside of the coop..maybe where the nest box is...there are "gaps" in the bottom, thinking maybe wrap the feed bags around it? I do plan on leaving the little window open , there is also 2- vents on the other side, we put them in this past fall for extra ventilation. (the pic was taken during the summer, ahhh..warmer days are coming..)...Any ideas from others or do you think they will be okay in this with the temps?

Hey Lisa and LMP:

I've used Stark Bros before and they had pretty good customer service...if you go that route, you need to get your tree requests lined up as they will sell out of popular stuff..HD also will get some nice stuff in but you need to keep an eye on when stuff comes in, most of my current dwarf trees are HDs...two elberta peaches, two 3-n-1 pears, and a stella cherry....you might check out the BHG sites...http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums/fruit/

also, if Pickering Valley feed does what they did last year, the first day old chicks will arrive the last week in Feb....they usually had about 15 varieties at a time about 50-100 of each type and got new shipments in weekly....my first crew stayed inside for eight weeks....(I was really ready to send them outside by then)....

Hope this helps
Stake- I love Starks!! That is who we got our Dwarf Peach..Redhaven! We have dwarf apple & cherry coming in the spring....yes, definitely have to pre-order if you want to get your "picks"...that is what happened to us this past spring..everything we picked was sold-out!! We made sure to order this fall FOR this coming spring!!

**LISA- if you go with these guys, make sure you get your order in, like now..hahahaa..seriously, Stake is right on with this!! They have awesome products, that is why it is gone so fast. If you look at my "garden" album in the profile you will see how nice the trees are. We spent the extra to get the "supreme"..it is bigger and the trees are already pruned correctly for you to start!

Thank you Stake for the info.

LMP----I just put more leaves into my coop..........but honestly I fee like they seem fine all the time.

If you eliminate most of the wind then wouldn't that eliminate the wind chill.

just thinking about the regular temperature
no wind
and dry environment

what about pine shavings if you don't like straw.

a deep pile of that might be warming too...........

Sorry..hoggin' the thread again...hee hee,
**Lisa- I got my strawberry plants at ROOTS..if you get a chance to get there in the spring, it is worth it!! We got the 'ever-bearing' type, they took off like mad!! I have so many runners, I will be make another mound for them! Just remember to invest a little in netting, those birds are a pain in the butt!! As soon as the fruit just started to look good..snag..they took it...darn birds.

Stark Bros. has everything though if you can't make it to a farmers market to get plants.
Thanks to Sharron, I have a few more raspberry plants..I definitively see more in the near future, have a couple different ideas as to how we are going to set those up...Lisa, do you do "Pinterest"?..Who had asked earlier about that??...sorry, I am all over the place....are we all sharing that info or no???

I wanted to share one of my Christmas gifts with you all... Some (non-poultry) friends thought it was "weird"....

My mom couldn't find a waterfowl chardonnay, so she picked a rooster instead!!
