Fantastic ! I bet you're very happy now. Is this your first hatch, I can't remember ?

The white spots on the head only indicate males if the mother was barred or cuckoo and the father was not. If the roo was barred or neither parent was barred, then the white dot doesn't mean anything WRT sex linking.

Yep, its my first hatch and first run with the cooler-bater.....Cream Crested Legbars have the white dot/black dot sexing....if you want to see some interesting genetics....look at how they made the CCL s.....much prefer olive eggs than another adolescent boy yanking the feathers out of the girls heads....

Yesterday was not a good day. I got a call from my mom around 6am yesterday to come help bury her horse. If you don't remember, mom got Belle through AC4H (Another Chance 4 Horses) before the FBI raided them last year. She came underweight and sick with strangles (equine strep that drains puss from lessions usually near their lymph nodes). It took us 8wks to get her over the strangles - she had 2 rounds. After that, she fattened up nice and was a normal, healthy horse during summer and fall. During this winter, Belle was going on and off her feed and showing signs of colic. She lost a lot of weight - she was skinnier than when my mom got her. Mom was trying everything. The vet diagnosed her with stomach ulcers and mom was giving her meds for that. She seemed to start eating better and was perking up some. She went off her feed again last week. On Saturday Belle spiked a 104.1 degree fever. I told mom on Sunday that it seemed like she had strangles again. Well, the final diagnosis from the vet was b@st@rd strangles (yes, that is the official name) that burst inside her body. There was no curing them and there was no chance for survival. My mom is devastated. When mom was picking her horse to rescue from the meat processor, Belle was my first choice - she was mom's 4th choice. I am so glad she did pick Belle, even if she wasn't the healthy, long-lived companion and friend we had hoped for. Her personality was huge and filled the barn. Mom says the barn feels empty even though she still has Bandit. My mom gave her a great last year without worry of being shipped off again (she's been shipped around a lot in her short 11yrs).
Belle was beautiful. So sorry for your loss. Sounds like she was in good hands and was very lucky to have you both.

That's true, autosexing breeds like CCL's and Rhodebars (what I have) can have the dot even if both parents are barred. Even some strains of Barred Rocks and Cuckoo Marans violate my "rule". I was looking at your chick and assuming it was not one of those, therefore I suspect the white spot does not indicate a male, unless you did a cross like I mentioned to get a "black sex link".

My chicks are so quiet it scares me! I never had them do that before. And the room temperature fluctuates so much, I'd think they would be unhappy. Oh well, nice change.

my group of four are extremely quiet too...they all seem to get along and are just not chirping as expected...I have them in a laundry basket which they have limited run around space..I think they'll get more animated when I move them into the dog crate in a couple of days....

So yours hatched! I often skip posts because there's so many. How many eggs did you have and how many hatched? Just 4?

I'm so happy for you!

My mom is having a rough time with her death. Bandit keeps standing at the corner he last saw her body. Everytime mom goes to the barn he thinks Belle is with her. I said one of two things would happen. Mom would either sell Bandit because she can't handle it or she,ll try to fill the void. She doesn't have that connection she had with Belle. I honestly think she will sell Bandit. We will see. She likes Bandit, but it isn't the same.

BTW' I have a new tablet with a keyboard and the layout is weird. My periods, commas and apostrophies may be mixed up until I figure it out.

Well I was on Craigslist just checking out chicks for sale and there were Delaware chicks for $2 each and they were just 10 min. down the road. So since they were so close, I went and got 6. When my daughter got home from school I needed to go to TSC. Well I bet you can guess what happened next..... my daughter had taken her own $ and said "Mom they have bantams and I have my own money, so can I please get some?"

Can you say sucker.... yep we came home with 6 chicks. They didn't have any marked down, but the girl told me to come back in a few days.....lol

Here are the Delaware...

Here are the bantams.... any guesses at to what they are?
