Oh Silkie he is going to freezer camp just wondering if he will be good to eat with all the hormones or wait it out a bit. I don't need him and I don't want to turn my back on him. Did that once as I was leaving and he came at me and I kept closing him in the door, didn't know he was stuck there. Teach him right the little ******* lol. So I guess we can process him whenever we get free time to do it from what I am hearing. I got a few straight run Black Australorps I'm sure I will get a rooster in the bunch I can replace him in the flock. Or I can hatch out a pretty GLW from my breeding group with the nice roo.
Yep, send him to camp ASAP. You can also tenderize him in a brine overnight before cooking or freezing. The 1 I use is as follows:
1 cup salt
1 cup sugar
2-3 tsp minced garlic
3-4 bay leaves
water enough to completely cover the bird

This is enough for 2 chickens or a turkey or duck. You can do half this amount for a single bird. Just soak 24-48 hours in the fridge & cook or freeze as desired. Gives the meat very nice flavor & extra juice for cooking so it doesn't get dry or tough.

Quote: Just easier to find & takes up less storage space. Works just the same. Only difference I have noticed, is I get a bread dough smell instead of a sweet hard cider smell.

Ahhhh, just had a litter of California/new Zealand last week, but I am way east (Harrisburg/ Lancaster).
If you decide to visit Amish country in about two months, they'll be ready

I just started breeding and not everything is of breeding age yet, so only scattered litters at the moment.
Lancaster is a bit far with the price of gas. I will definitely keep you in mind if I can't find anything close.
Thanks so much for the reply!

Ok experts, another coop question on. ...poop boards

If you use them how big are they. I wasn't planning on building them in but the more I look at them and think about it, I'm thinking I might do it. Would 16 inches from wall to edge be good enough with a roost about 8 inches from the wall? I'm thinking of putting one down each side (I'll attempt to get a picture so you can see what I mean). That would make two, 10 ft roosts, one on each side. One would be above the nest boxes, the other would be under the window and over the chicken door. I'll probably spend the next hour trying to load a picture lol.

Opinions please.

LMP is that the Farmers Market in Renovo? I've been up there more often (and I just got another order for up there) lately than I've been in Williamsport! If it is worth stopping in, I may do so on Monday or Tuesday. Don't know my schedule yet.

I have a dog house in the yard. Dog has never been in it. Could I use it as a temp coop inside a run? Run would be easier to build and adapt to then building the coop later. I gotta get those babies out of my house!

like I said, about an hour to get the picture uploaded lol. The reason I'm thinking 16 inches is because that's how much space I have between the walls and my giant clean out doorway.

I make 24" wide poop boards and center a 2x4 (widest side flat) a few inches over the board. They spend a lot of time up there and a lot of poop get caught. Don't skimp here and you will need to clean the rest of the coop far less often.

Does it really matter if the boards jut out into the door opening a little, assuming the door opens out?

I think the dog house would work for you, but expect them to roost on the outside top as they grow. You could raise it up so they like to roost inside better, or you could accept that for now and put a tarp over that end of the run to protect them from the rain.

One word of caution about tarping, consider how the rain will lay on the top and try to add poles to let most of the rain drain off safely as it hits, otherwise it will weight the tarp down and possibly break your run other structures. Trying to heave a foot of accumulated water off a tarp is not something you will do more than once, you'll fix it after the first storm if you don't before.

Don't ask how I acquired that bit of good judgement . . .

Completely off topic, I just didn't know where to ask this one. Anyway, the picture sucks, but I noticed an old bird fountain near my property line. This has a solid field stone base that's rounded and is about 3 feet high, narrowing as it goes up. The bird bath top doesn't look original so maybe this was a sundial at one time, I believe this could be over 100 years old. But anyway, I was thinking about making an offer to buy this because it's just in the overgrown weeds of my neighbors property. It's mostly the base I'm interested in, because the bird bath is junk. Anyway though, if you were to buy make an offer for this, how much would you offer? I don't know if this is something completely worthless, if it's worth maybe $20, or if it may be worth even more. I'm trying to find a fair offer

because..yeast is cheaper?....Hey, speaking of...we have a farmer market here in town. He is very new and still getting items in that people ask for, well...I had asked about yeast and he came up with this...a pound of yeast for like $3.55... a POUND of it!! I was like...WOW:eek: ..it is vacuumed sealed in a block, it is Fleischmanns(sp?)...he must be able to order this stuff through a resturant / bakery  thing...he is amish, maybe they are buying whole sale?..hmmm...

That is how I buy my yeast- I make bread quite a bit, I have bought it at bjs 2 pounds per pack, around that price per pound :)
