10x16 Shrink Bag Fresh (Individual)
http://www.cornerstone-farm.com/ they have dif sizes that are cheaper too

They work beautiful for whole birds, and they have different shapes for parts and pieces also... well worth it... pack in appropriate size bag, dip in hot water, wait for bubbles to stop, wipe off to dry and put in freezer.

Wing... I don't try the vacuum sealer for whole birds or things with really odd or bulky shapes but is good for meatballs and other flatter stuff. I can vacuum seal bags of cookies (8 or 10 per bag) and freeze them so DH can take them to work when he wants. Just easier to do one day of baking 12 dozen cookies than doing them in small batches and they stay pretty fresh.

Odd man out here...
I gave my vacuum sealer to my daughter, I really did not like it..

Come to think of it my daughter ends up with way to much of my stuff,,, remember the dehydrator, she borrowed it, I have not seen it since...

Interested in those shrink wrapped bags, I would have to charge extra for those though, wonder if people would prefer that.

Wing:

I have one of those food savers....like it a lot, but, its not for everything....for meat, it will not allow freezer burn, and I have kept steaks and lobster for more than two years with great results....I wouldn't use it for chicken as I run through that pretty quickly, tried blanching some green beans last summer, and had them the other night...worked good enough....my two cents.....

Anyone hear fromm Cc yet, he is most likely still cleaning up mud..

Glad to here no serious damage was done by the storm, I had to go the long way around for a day and went thru lots of straw trying to keep everyone dry, but considering what they got in other states, we did good.

I have a processing question....

I do not know where everyone is getting my number at, but we are getting regular calls to process for people..( not people on here ). Apparently there's more and more people raising their own meat , then realizing that they can not finish the job......just wondering what a good price would be to process, I hate the packaging part all, would it be reasonable to ask them to bring coolers that I could just put them in ice water and they finish the job....

Not complaining, word of mouth is the best kind of advertising, we now have more egg customers than eggs from word of mouth, ,

The price sheet with options is a good idea. That way the customer does the parts they want done & you charge by how much work you do.

I have a vacuum sealer I picked up at Kmart. I think it is a Kenmore brand. Not sure if a whole chicken would fit in those bags. Never tried. Use it mostly for the managers special meat from grocery store. I but bulk and split it up since I'm not a "family" but family size packages save so much money.

Also great for freezing veggies since you can make flat packages that stack well in the freezer. Remember, I package a out of my veggies in one and two cup portions.
I like the gentle or wet feature. Also works for dry goods in mason jars, like rice and grains, with the hose attachment.

I just snagged 1 on e-bay that should be here tomorrow or Monday. I just used ziplock bags last year but didn't like them. I think the roll bags will work much better.

Funny, we never set out to be a backyard butcher, guess it is best to go the route that is needed...

Need to check the legal parts of this but a phone call told me that as long as we are doing this for the consumer and not a resale business we are good

I was wondering about that. It does make sense though.
As for the bags, was it just telling you to wait to freeze it, not seal it?

First hatch to lockdown ever

SUPER!!! so excited for you! Best advice I can give is to be patient, read Sally Sunshine's "Hatching 101" article and sit on your hands. Also, I like to keep liquid infant vitamins (no iron) on hand along with triple antibiotic ointment. Have marbles to put in your chick water container so they don't fall asleep with their little heads in there and drown (it happens) and take lots of pics!!

I'm sorry for your damage. We lost 3 chickens yesterday, I can't say it was due to the weather, but it's still very discouraging to have an animal die under your care, and 3 in one day is worse. I'm hoping that is all, if more chicks die today I'm not sure what I'll do.

And I had a newly hatched chick drown this week. Still kicking myself over that one too.

I did have some fun giving the chicks a chopped up hard boiled egg. Some figured it out and the others saw it and much activity ensued.

Wow! rough day hope today is better.
Quote: Glad you haven't floated away. I had processing down by Walter Nolt, he's very cheap, you need to bring your own cooler and bags. They do bag all the giblets together.

Quote: Hey! Welcome back, and I hear you snuck a birthday past us!! So

HAPPY HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!
