I lost the bet with the brothers within the first week,,,,convenience is all around us and harder than you would think to ignore,,,mine was a long rough day at work, didn't have time to put a lunch together, even changed clothes at work that day since time was at a premium, ended up ordering a delivered sub...it was either that or not eating all day..

Looking at prices of all natural food has put me in one of my cheapskate modes, hubby hates these moods, I tend to go overboard, he is afraid I will have him eating grass or something free, I am not opposed to dumpster diving, they throw away perfectly good things

In golf that's called a mulligan.....so it doesn't really count.....

stake----------re: potato bags or growing potatoes.............I have a whole lot of links on my pinterest site if you want to check them out.

One thing you might want to consider is putting a few holes in the bottom so it doesn't get tooo wet.............you probably already did that.

then lots of peat moss or other absorbing type of materials like vermiculite.............mixed with your soil.

I was told you had to start with SEED potatoes because reg potatoes are treated with stuff that makes them slow to sprout or grow..........but I have heard people have grown potatoes using potatoes that sprouted in the potato bin in their kitchen............so they just planted them!

you need like one eye on each potato.............if you decide to cut the potatoes.............

other than this..........I am not sure................

there are all kinds of problems that can occur.................

I basically ordered 6 organic seed potatoes and build a chicken wire cylinder and used straw on the edges and well mixed dirt in the middle.............I put more dirt and straw after they grew thru......but now they are way way big and growing on the outside of the cylinder................. based on what people said on here I will add more dirt and straw but not worry about it much.

see what happens.

Its important that they are not drowned or too dry------------because it takes a long time for the water to get all the way inside etc

and then they should be fed -------------I have used miracle grow soil...............so have not done any feeding yet.............maybe in a few weeks? I have to read and try as I go.

also ----I think there are some bugs that are specific to potatoes.................

What "apeeled" to me ( pun intended) was the no dig idea and basically put it in and add a bit now and then and just wait till fall! sounded do-able and maybe it works , maybe not?

this is my first attempt at this...........and I am just trying to follow stuff I have read..............at least what I remember!
We bought a bag of "eyeing" potatoes for $1.00 from our local farmer market..and you see how well they did for us!! They have taken off like crazy!!

Our family is trying to move to only eating things that we grew/raised ourselves or that someone we know grew/raised themselves. We are interested in trying to barter for things...you give me blueberries, I give you eggs etc. Problem is, we don't really know anyone around us (York county) that are interested in that type of thing. Does anyone know if there are any groups that do things like this?
That sounds awesome! Unfortunately we are in the boonies...very far from most everyone here. I am not sure of your area and what they offer. Sometimes in the local grocery stores people will hang flyers for ideas they would like to start

... I wish you luck!!
I was going to talk to my neighbor about doing "swaps" together. She has tons of chickens and they raise ALpine-something goats. They sell their milk and she has classes on making cheese. She had already offered to show me the cheese making anytime. I am hoping to offer homemade Breads/baked goods..maybe some produce, I don't know how much of a garden they grow..if any. She was very excited to hear I will be getting into the Bee-keeping adventure, so there might be something to swap-with ...going to take awhile for that though.
I don't use facebook anymore (too much of a time suck for me) but maybe I will try to put together some type of site/email group. If anyone in York County or anywhere close wants to be part, let me know. We are really trying to do this, as my daughter has three brain tumors and we are committed to eating things that aren't processed etc. Not to mention all the other benefits of eating/shopping locally.

In chicken related news, here is a quick shot of my Dominique broody and her sleepy chicks.

I am late on this but,...SO sorry to hear of your daughters situation! My heart goes out to you and your family. All positive thoughts your way!!!

**Wing- Sorry to hear your bet didn't go as planned.
***Have a question ...where would i get a nest box like the one you had posted a little while ago?...it has 10 boxes...I am looking for something, not quite that big..maybe 3-6 boxes....I like the idea of metal, it wouldn't have to be new either...I don't mind restorating.

We finally got the large coop 3/4 enclosed, keeping an eyeball out for windows and a door,...put chicken-wire fencing around the strawberries, so no more rabbits chewing through!,
Also painted some "new-to-me" cabinets for our farm-house kitchen. Mulch was delivered today..it was last years, a little more degraded, but will do the job!! Was only $6.00 for a whole scoop!!

Making some pillows for our front porch chairs...it is amazing what you can find for pennies at yard sales!!

Now, just need some extra hands to get that mulch around the berry-patch... some paint on the coop to match the rest of the sheds...and get the pallet fence up!!

....Hope everyone is enjoying this weather as much as we are !!!

Going to have so much more room in the large coop once we get that thing enclosed completely!! Will love to adding some colorful eggs to the bunch!!

LOVE the fabric you found for the pillow! Your chair reminds me of sitting on my parents' wraparound front porch and sipping on ice tea.

Thank you so much!! I found it at a garage sale...50"x50" square for .25 cents!!... Just unbutton and throw in the washer!! The pillow itself was with 3 others for $2.00-all brand new, still in the plastic...I love yard sales!!

Dang! I was hoping you'd win. If it makes you feel any better... I was going to show my support by trying this at the same time as you, I didn't even make it past breakfast! Turns out....I can not drink coffee without cream...the good side is, I'm definitely thinking more about what we're eating.
