Got my first egg today from my chickens that hatched in February. My favorite hen laid it too. Wrong place though, right on the back porch in a collapsible storage bag with hay in it. Come to think of it, I'm sure she was just being considerate and laying it on the the back porch, steps away from the kitchen. Ha!

Hennifer Lopez laid a small torpedo! Woot woot!

CONGRATULATIONS! I'm glad you got your first. I'm still waiting. .. very impatiently lol. A couple of my girls are looking REALLY red. Everyone's 17 weeks old now. I'm getting impatient lol. I saw my Lily (EE) squatting for one of my roos yesterday. She's one of the ones who are super red in the face. It's going to be a race to see who lays first. It's between Cloud (silkie), Lily (EE), and Ariel and Daffodil (GC). Well see!

New nugget pack went in this morning.

These are fast grow broilers from longenecker's hatchery in elizabethtown, I prefer to order local, so I can pick up instead of ship.

They sure are cute when they are still nuggets! I prefer local pick up also if at all possible, for eggs and meat chicks, though I may break down and order next year because catching the TSC chicks is unpredictable. We may compromise and special order them through our TSC, so they are shipped to store and already earmarked for us. We did 27 this spring and could easily have done 40... though that pushes freezer space, so we may do a fall run so we can have a good supply for over winter.

Should be a local hatchery for you, most do not advertise since they are on contract with the large production houses, but if you are willing to put in your order 3weeks in advance and in some cases pay up front, most will accomadate us small guys... Luckily I have 3 hatcheries to choose from that are all within a half hour ddrive, 1 for layers, 1 for meat birds, then I also have the freedom ranger hatchery that is close by.

Maybe some close up shots will entice more people to raise their own...

It will only take a couple of weeks and they will no longer be cute,,,they turn into stinky little things really fast.

Hi... had a girl go bloody awhile ago. Something got her today in her nest about an hour ago. I think it was the eagle..she was there but dead. This morning there was peeps chirping comin from the eggs and on was pipping. Well all eggs are still ok but one had a lot if shell some off.. I threw them in an old bator in a state of panic.. but then remember I have another bloody girl who broods rocks half the time. So I took them out of the bator and in a cage with my other girl. Do you think Could have messed them up. I was just trying to save them. I hope the one doesn't get shrink wraped. :-(

Sorry about your hen. :( That stinks. Just watch the one egg. If youre in the western side of PA, the relative humidity here is 88 right now. Hopefully it'll bee okay. Keep an eye on it. The hen's moist breast should keep it humid.
