Oh, but they are beautiful! Tell him he's spoiled to enjoy nature so up close and personal!LMP, How many quail and what kind should I set for you, I sold a couple of the valley quail to a couple that wanted them for an indoor birdcage... The turkey are Beltsville small whites, I am hoping to over winter them and be able to have a breeding trio for next spring, keeping fingers crossed on that one. Barbiegirl, you are so welcome, ducklings are my favorite, Muscovy will also perch if a low and wide spot is provided.... Hubby is not happy with my wanderers that are trying to help him turn the straw piles.![]()
Your girls are about two weeks behind me, so you can figure you'll be seeing eggs soon too. I'm excited for you too!CONGRATULATIONS! I'm glad you got your first. I'm still waiting. .. very impatiently lol. A couple of my girls are looking REALLY red. Everyone's 17 weeks old now. I'm getting impatient lol. I saw my Lily (EE) squatting for one of my roos yesterday. She's one of the ones who are super red in the face. It's going to be a race to see who lays first. It's between Cloud (silkie), Lily (EE), and Ariel and Daffodil (GC). Well see!
The waiting game is terrible, especially when they song and fool you....Im still waiting for my girls to start dropping torpedo's .....there EErs too , Cant wait to see colored eggs

Wing, have you ever used Moyer's Chicks in Quakertown? I pass them often and I was just curious on the quality.Should be a local hatchery for you, most do not advertise since they are on contract with the large production houses, but if you are willing to put in your order 3weeks in advance and in some cases pay up front, most will accomadate us small guys... Luckily I have 3 hatcheries to choose from that are all within a half hour ddrive, 1 for layers, 1 for meat birds, then I also have the freedom ranger hatchery that is close by.
I got sex links from Moyer's several years ago and was happy with the price and quality. Very small selection of breeds, but if they have what you want, go for it. You might try stopping in when you have room to brood chicks and see if they have any "specials" on extra chicks.Wing, have you ever used Moyer's Chicks in Quakertown? Sorry if these are stupid questions but does quail taste similar to chicken? What is the benefit to having them? Can you house them with your chickens? Until this site I've never given them much thought.
I thought my chickens weren't laying as much as usual and didn't really give it a second thought. They go through stages. Then I picked up my tiny silkie Nicey who is broody. She has been sitting since July 5th and I guess every day since she has been taking more and more eggs. Not sure how she was covering all of them! I really don't need anymore chicks but I let her keep 8 and moved her to the other coop with the chicks who aren't laying yet. Would she keep taking more and more eggs if I wouldn't have moved her? Crazy little chicken!
Tomorrow morning I leave for NC to visit my sister. I actually thought about checking out local Craigslist ads for along to way and see if I can find any chicken breeds I've been searching for! Then I remembered that 1. I don't have room for anymore chickens. 2. I'm sure no one else wants to drive 8 hours with chickens in the car. 3. My husband would divorce me! lol.
