So I've been raising chickens for 12 years and this is the first year I've let broody's hatch for me. So far 2 of 11 eggs have hatched. Crossing fingers

Stake and others I want to keep track of the amount of eggs layed...........their patterns etc , in case their is some change in the pattern. Now that I have more laying hens............. also to keep track of when I provide certain medications.........worming etc............... what if one chicken stops laying due to some health issue,.............will I be able to tell who it is ? I have 3 brown egg layers............and am getting more chicks.....but they wont start to lay until the fall............just thought it might help to keep track of some things.........
It's still snowing in the Poconos. I am so glad that hubby and the boys ( I couldn't help much besides hand screws) build the little roofs over the runs. This is my silkie coop roof. The silkie run roof we built. My layers huddled in the dry, snow free spot from the roof.

I do not have roos.................just 4 girls..................
I have noticed that when feathers are pulled (such as during a disagreement or by rooster activity) the hen often will not regrow till she has a molt. Some of our broody hens often look scraggly in their back when they start setting and through their hatch, but often about 2 weeks before they leave their youngsters I start seeing large quantities of new feathers growing in. This makes sense since broodies often go through a light molt after raising a clutch.
If your hen was getting close to her normal molt then Mother Nature probably just has it organized so she doesn't have to grow feathers in twice.

I may be hitting you up for some hatching eggs... I just had another hen go to a box... she was due since she is usually a May and September hatcher. I would love to get some WR eggs if you have any for hatching. I am loving the Rocks I have.

that makes sense...............I see no signs of illness .......no changes in behavior and her skin is not open or wounded...........she just has never filled in her bald spot? so I figured its probably ok

I know I give them enough food and good quality food..............so it cant be lack of protein...........

thanks for your input

Folks it is not the snow that I want to see, it is the quiet time that comes with winter......winter is the only time I get to sit down and read a book from cover to ending, all in one day.
I am backwards,, I do not know the meaning of " lazy days of summer"... these days happen in the middle of winter....

I am also hearing it could be a long cold winter, just like last year.

Is everyone hiding from the snow?

Just summer busy, I think. There has been no break in the weeds or yard all summer, and now wingstone posts about the winter, so I have to go double my wood pile!

I get the feeling I'm not the only one here with three times more projects than time available. And my boss thinks I should have time to go to work every day, too!

My fermented whole grain experiment continues,

I have a few hen's that being rooster favorite's seem to always have bald spots, they are growing feathers at a fast rate all of a sudden.
Egg production has picked back up
I am finding that they will pick in a different order at times, one day they may pick the wheat out first and other days they barely touch it? Same with other grains.

I noticed that the poop piles are not as watery also, looks like a very small doggy pile of poop.

Am gonna stick to the grains since it is going well..

This experiment overflows into the meat section also, the current batch of meat birds have been fed nothing but grains ( fermented and sprouted ).

Your welcome, now go build that pile of winter heat...

By the way, do you still want any of these turkey, or are you just gonna swap turkey processing help for a fresh thanksgiving turkey???( hint,hint,hint).. they are growing nicely. Looks like I will end up with anything from 12 to18 pound turkey's, if the current growth rate continues.
