Birds are molting and broody...crazy....Hen-bree is in "broody-quarantine"...a little hotel just for the egg- insane birds.....

I was going to buy wazine for my chicken first aid kit and was told by one of the clerks at tractor supply that you cannot eat the eggs when you use it. Is that true?

Also, just have to share.


The first egg was so large I felt bad for the chicken who laid it. Then she must have given too much with the first one that she laid the last one. The center two are about normal size for reference. I found out that the small egg is called a "fart" or "wind" egg. Too funny.

Question about Marans....These two chicks are 11 weeks old tomorrow, just shy of 4 months...., I have a Marans, but don't ask me when she started, been too long ago..hahaha
**How long , generally , does it take for them to lay?.....their faces are just starting to get pinkie-red...I will get an updated pic of them tomorrow, everyone is in bed now. They have learned to roost with the big girls, so no more poopy-nest boxes...thank goodness!!

They are so skiddish, i do spend time with them,but they are still little nutters...I do believe we have lucked out and both are girls..no sign of combs or boyishness...

Have been very happy with the MArans we do have, she has never even thought about going broody....she can'y stand eggs in the coop actually...she gets very vocal about it.
The wyandottes on the other hand have been a very good learning experience about this particular breed and what it really means when they say.."has a tendency to go broody".....now i know

Love every breed i have so far, each are so very different....would LOVE to experience.. barred rock, maybe some colorful egg layers- EE, ameracanas,(please don't judge the spelling...still learning these breed names

TP:

No eating the eggs while de-worming chooks....I think one week past last dose is the timing...it you are going to do more than one dose, feed the eggs back to the chooks....my two cents.

That is correct, on the "with-hold" for the eggs(10-14 days)...that is why i chose NOW to do this..because I am not getting very many eggs right now from these girls(1-2 eggs a day, from 5 laying hens

)..they are molting and broody, so..no-time like the present!!...I cook the "with-hold" eggs and feed them back to the birds...they love it and it gives them the extra protein..
Now..some people have and do eat those eggs, but I have enough health issues and i am not willing to chance that...those eggs may or may-not have the medication "in" them...so, do what you will..but I DO NOT recommend eating them, the label reads not to eat them either...JMHO...
 
Thanks for the tip on wormer and eating eggs, stake and LMP. I would not really trust it either. I put the wazine back when the clerk told me. If I need it I will get it or give them wormwood tea. Do you worm the hens only if they show signs or could you do it now prophylactically?

depends on who you would ask...I only like to do it when the signs are there...had an obvious sign..

, it happens & with all the wild birds out there, can be a real problem for some.
But..that being said, I do "worm" them in the fall..regardless. Just like the dogs...(they have had a lot of "whatevers from whoevers" in the yard and you just are never sure, so better safe than sorry.)
It is very rarely an issue during winter, they are only really around each other, so not too many foreign friends.

What is "wormwood" tea?

LMP.... if there is a large fowl breed that isn't broody I sure haven't found it yet!!!

though honestly, my Barred Rocks are 6 months old now and haven't gone broody yet.... so there may be hope yet!
