Goats.

I am considering them as my next addition. I read various opinions on how hard they are too keep and contained. I know there are goat keepers here. I'm considering two does or a doe and a whether. Would a fenced, partially wooded, partially paste area be appropriate? Do they require a lot of time, or am I piking at 10- 30 minutes a day.

Can anyone recommend va of book on the subject?

Does anyone close to me keep any that would permit me to check out their setup? (I'm in Mount Joy)

i knew someone who owned goats but never really paid attention to setup. i know that fresh eggs daily website includes goats. maybe she will have some info.

Where are you taking the class? If it is in lancaster, i'm not far and you may borrow chickens.

Not sure yet. The vet said they typically don't give classes in the fourth quarter unless there's a lot of demand, and there are no classes scheduled yet. It could be near here, Harrisburg, or just about anywhere in the state, but there likely won't be any of them anywhere until early spring.

This has kind of thrown a wrench into things. When she said I'd need to bring my chickens, I told her, no, I have ducks, remember? She didn't seem to understand and said she knew I had ducks but you don't don't bring those to the class, you bring your chickens. Then I told her I have no chickens because my hubby is a chicken-hater and that all I have is ducks. She seemed baffled about that and said she'd never heard of anyone who had ducks and no chickens. That's when she said I'd have to find a way to rent or borrow some chickens.

LOL. I can honestly say I never dreamed I'd someday be in a situation where I'd need to rent chickens.

i cannot understand why the teacher is so adamant about chickens. ducks, chickens, whatever. you would still be able to show your skills with ducks. that is probably what the instructor has always used and cannot improvise.

Well we had a baby hatch this morning! missing its right eye and cross over beak. It is the only to hatch so Lucky will finally have a friend! The beak isn't too bad it straightens out whenever she peeps and when she grooms herself. Lucky is 10 days and The silkie was just born today. Lucky is a standard and Lucking being a Silkie is a Bantam. The size difference freaks me out, will I be able to introduce them to each other? Lucky seemed really interested when I was holding the silkie in the brooder...then he jumped on his head to get onto my arm.

The second Silkie egg that made into lock down didn't hatch. It internally piped but when it did it piped through one of the veins in the membrane and bled out...How often does that happen??? He also had a cross over beak, not as bad though. I couldn't see the eyes to see if they were fully developed or not. I will get a picture of The eye of the silkie that hatched this morning after my husband gets home.

Those of you who know about silkies...What color is this Silkie? Blue? Splash? Silver?

Thanks for the sentiment! That's very sweet. I'm sure I'll figure something out. I'll kind of have to or I won't be able to take the class.

I think I paid $200/month for mine, but I'm old too :/

just out of curiosity why do you need chickens for this class

They make good study partners... :lau

<JK>. You have to demonstrate that you can draw blood to earn your certification.

@Jade, the closest one offered to us would be the one in Collegville or the one in Lancaster. Sometimes the class is offered with chickens there for you to torture....uh, I mean practice on.

@CC, I have goats. I'm not exactly close, but you can come visit us if you want.

and you use chickens for that? Hmm. i am taking a course for vaccine certification for pharmacy but i believe we will be stabbing each other.

Yep, I guess you're supposed to get all the practice you can. The wife of one of the guys I work with was studying to be an LPN or phlebotomist last year. My coworker told me that he and his three sons were almost afraid to get near her at the time because she poked them with a needle every time they got too close.
