here you go wingstone, we only processed 24 today, was holding the rest back to see if i wanted to keep them going, decided to go ahead and process the rest next week, as you can see had them for supper, two for me and two for husband, sooooo good, had forgotten how good quail are.

Looks like you had some good sized quail there. Quail make for a nice meal, my grandkids especially like that they get their very own quail on the plate. Making me think about downsizing my quail pen for the winter.

This was my little Lucky last night when I was trying to get him warmed up. This was a couple minutes before he started peeping again and trying to stand up. He's doing really well this morning climbing around with all his brothers and sisters

Here are all Cloud's babies this morning. 3 more have appeared overnight. One to go!

Good evening all:

Have a bit of chick drama and am looking for your thoughts....the other day came home from work to find broody outside the coop with her solo 1.5 day old chick under her, I moved both back to the coop....

this morning around 11:00a, I was out setting things up to go to work and broody comes squawking out of the coop/run....I get curious and find her chick sitting in the run nearly dead....(either was stepped on or pecked)....I ran the chick inside and warmed her with the oven then set up a makeshift brooder....the little tyke could barely move...I set her under the lights put food and drink in the brooder and went to work...

found her tonight in the corner away from the light.....moved her back under the light to warm her...(I have not seen her eat of drink yet)...after and hour she woke up and was chirping and standing( not 100% but alert and moving around).....

So, do I put her back under mom and carry on or raise her solo in a brooder.....neither alternative seems good....????

I hate to be so ignorant when it comes to chickens, so I'm often afraid to show my ignorance by asking questions about basic things everyone else here already knows. I'm trying to learn a little even though I know we'll never have any. Can you tell me what "warmed her with the oven" means? I have to ask that one because I got an image of you literally putting a chick in a kitchen oven.

they're suppose to be the texas a&m jumbo's, i had bought the eggs from a pair of brothers on ebay, one brother told me to butcher between 10 & 12 weeks to get bigger quail, bought 50, they sent 60, had 38 hatch, lost one in the water, got wet and died, but all together, very happy with them, going to order more next year i think, i like them, altho they do poo alot but much easier to clean insides out than with a chicken and needless to say, they tasted as good as i remembered (sometimes things aren't like what you remembered when a kid)

well, I was holding the chick in my hands....it is just the easiest way to get a good amount of heat on a chick fast and as it get hotter, you can move the chick away from the heat source

decided Fisher's advice was best..moved mom and baby into the dog crated in the basement....baby hopped right under mom...and mom has been alot less defensive when I've approached....I'm going to give them two days in the brooder then if the chick is looking good, they'll go back to the coop on Sunday....

Are u feeding them ultra high protein feed? I've never raised quail, I heard they need game bird feed, how does that work out expense wise?

Some do, I feed them the same as a chicken,, but since I like o hang out with the quail they tend to get more mealworms and treats...
Quail grow fast and can be processed way before anything else...I usually have eggs at 8 weeks or sooner.
