Are u feeding them ultra high protein feed? I've never raised quail, I heard they need game bird feed, how does that work out expense wise?
yes, i always feed game and turkey for the high protein, as for expense, about the same as feeding that many chicks, only different is, the quail poo alot more i think, they also waste like chicks by scratching it out too. i think i bought three 50lb bags to get them to 10 weeks old, and was feeding thirty seven of them, they're not as flighty as i thought they would be either, unlike bob whites

Some do, I feed them the same as a chicken,, but since I like o hang out with the quail they tend to get more mealworms and treats...
Quail grow fast and can be processed way before anything else...I usually have eggs at 8 weeks or sooner.
mine started laying around 6 weeks old, and got quite a few double yolk eggs, really something to see, the first double yolker i got, almost as large as a bantam egg, poor quail hen that laid it, surprised she didn't croak, still getting a few, well was til yesterday

, i had quite a few hens, of the 24 we processed, only eight were males, i still have 13 to do something with yet, not sure whether to process or what with them.

Not sure if game feed is pellet or mash, but I feed wet food to quail, cuts down on that waste from them flinging the food around, even if it is not ferment, just some plain water to make it a mash...

Hate to admit but I have had some lengthy conversation with the quail pen, they are a chatty bunch.

i had the crumbles, but didn't think about wetting it down, will try that next time, yeah, mine are chatty too, course the males like to yoo hoo all the time, i would pick one out, love it a little, put it back in and he would stand on his toes and give me a yoo hoo, funny birds
yesterday when we were processing, my sfh cross kept coming up to see what was going on, just made a pain of herself but i do love that little hen

Good morning all:

decided Fisher's advice was best..moved mom and baby into the dog crated in the basement....baby hopped right under mom...and mom has been alot less defensive when I've approached....I'm going to give them two days in the brooder then if the chick is looking good, they'll go back to the coop on Sunday....

Glad to hear of improvement!

I would like to see that! :pop

Here's a few pictures, because we all like them, right? ;). :D

One of the best things about coming back from my vacation was seeing all of my chickens safe, and really seeing a difference in my fox injured hen. She is acting much more normally and her feathers are coming in beautifully after the attack 2 weeks ago.

You can see where she lost a lot of feathers on the side as well.

Thank you to everybody for all the helpful advice, I couldn't have done this without you! A year ago I was finishing my coop. :hugs

Got some random pics today also, just walking around enjoying the fall like day

And I got my first east indie egg today, they sure are funny looking, the color of a gray river rock.

Stake and Aurora, I have a thought. Scary, I know. Are the moms not doing a good job because it is so late in the season, and the weather is messing with their broody feeling?
I know it is all under control now, but I was just thinking of the "why?"

Good Point MCC. My chick was found next to the feeder outside in the run...chooks from both pens eat out of that feeder...could be the chick it just ditzy (under developed in the brain)...now they are both inside, mom seems to be doing a good job...when they go back to the coop, I'll be putting a larger feed and water supply....days are getting shorter and chilly...puts more demand on mom to get out and feed....
