The grass may germinate, but it will still be very young and tender when heavy frosts hit, making it likely to die out during the winter. You may need to fence off the area until the grass is well established. You definitely want Tall Fescue when you buy the next lot. There are improved varieties that are used for playing fields and it is commonly available in home centers in the spring. I would look for high-quality and buy less to save money, rather than go for the lowest price per lb. High quality is 1) very few weed seeds and 2) proven, named varieties (not K31, the cheap stuff). Sowing sparsely and protecting it well works, because the individual plants will grow larger if not crowded.Don't tell me that, Hubby will not be amused.
