I've tried everything I can think of, stuff I've read on here and in books and have gotten no eggs in weeks. Starting to think my old girls have quit and my Jersey giants and orpingtons aren't mature enough yet. Any suggestions? Store bought eggs just don't
taste the same. Starting to think I need to find a couple laying hens and sneak them in the coop while my hubbys at work.
My Orpingtons have never been good layers, I rarely get eggs from them in the winter. We are adding red sex links this spring.

I went back to orpingtons because they were such good layers. My 'babies' of 6 months are even producing on par with my year olds (1 egg every other day atm avg).

How old are the "old girls"

What specific tactics have you tried?

Supposedly, wyandottes are good winter layers; but, my marans out lay everyone through the winter, I did have one orp that was laying occasionally went on strike about two weeks ago....my glw is laying about 2 eggs a week....

I will second the Maran out-laying the wyandottes...last year "Chicka" was a real machine.
Her molt this year has really taken it out of her, she is looking better though, has a it more spunk in her now.
The Wyandottes are a mystery to me right now..i have a lot yet to learn..I have 4 of them and they are all different.
They ALL went broody this year, and just until this past weekend, they were ALL on egg strike!
I do believe "Cordon" is the the one laying now. 3 eggs the last 4 days..they all look to be from the same bird..color/shape-pointed end/ over all size.
It is so nice to be getting something ..finally.

both of my wyandottes and my Bahama/Marans cross haven't laid in a couple weeks now :/

Well, heck! I haven't gotten any eggs lately either! Darn dog! :))
We hauled a load of "chicken carcasses w/ head and some skin" a few days ago. I couldn't believe how much stuff leaked out of the trailer!
