@Auroradream, looks like you've got things under control, blue Kote is great stuff.

I am at the tail end of a 2 week school break, and consequently hiding in the bedroom with a bottle of wine. Enough said?

Brought in the New Year with the Polar Bear Dip in Ocean City. It was unbelievably cold

I really want some Orphinton eggs! Would you have enough fertial eggs for me as well?

Yes I will should have eggs available.

My black and blue Roos are in with my BBS girls and 1 white girl

My white roo is in with 2 whites girls and what I suspect is a lavender hen.

I also have several orpington Roos mixed with my blue patterned rocks, a few pet quality white rocks, and my 3 freedom ranger hens just to see what results in an effort to produce a good meaty dual purpose self sustaining flock.

Their soft skin sure does tear easily.... if you have flushed/cleaned it and blu-coated it then that is the biggest part of the battle. if it is gaping or easily seen when he moves around you could probably use a drop or two of super glue in the center to hold the edges together to prevent it from gaping and showing the red underneath. It isn't a good idea to totally close off a wound (in my opinion) but just one point of glue in the center will act like a suture to help hold the edges closer to each other so they can fill in and heal.
Triple antibiotic ointment can help also, but make sure it is the type without the pain reliever.... the pain reliever is something that can't be used on chickens.

If it helps, we had a young hen with a gaping wound on her side (from an amorous rooster) and with simple cleaning, blue coat and some triple antibiotic it healed in a surprisingly short time. (due to location on her we also placed a hen saddle on her for a couple of weeks)
last year when we had the meat birds..they were chicks at the time..DH tried to help me with them, we were useing 'Hen-Bree' to brood ..well, things went south very fast on him & before he knew it she had tore one chick trying to get her chick and pecked his hand for the other.
He felt so bad and said he was never helping with the chicks again...till next time...
anyway, the "tear' was at the neck/shoulder area, pretty darn bad too...I just cleaned it out real quick cause the whole time it was screaming and Hen-bree was going bonkers in their coop/run area...then I sprayed 'blue-kote', squirted a bunch of triple-antibiotic in there..pinched it till it stuck and put that baby back in with momma. Everything was good after that...we just made sure to get HER (mom) first..THEN the chicks..if we absolutely had to do something with them.
there wasn't any real blood loss from the entire event..just a lot of shock for birds and DH.
Lesson is learned though, that is for sure! So glad I had read bunches and listened to people who had birds..always make sure you have an animal first aide kit around at all times..never know what could happen & when!!

We love to barter around here. My kitchen is the biggest barter we've ever done!
That's awesome! Excellent design!
Bunny pile = bunny right? Haha, forgot to ask while I was out there, I have a sister in law that is interested in rabbit meat.
Agreed...
It is quite nippy out, but my girls know how to line up in the morning to catch those first Rays of sunshine! Looks like a chorus line of chicken butts.

We like to barter and trade too. We work hard on the wine and would never give someone something we wouldn't drink or eat ourselves. For the past several years, instead of cash, we pay the person who does our taxes with wine, homemade jelly, jarred tomatoes and sauce.

oh boy..poor little guy your not kidding!! wowsers..did you happen to check around the pen/run area to make sure there isn't any metal or something that could snag? Just a thought...hope he gets better fast!
This is a good thought, that looks clean enough that it may have been a slice from a broken piece of wire.... I have seen our roosters catch their combs in the chicken wire before, the danged birds don't have the common sense God gave a flea sometimes when they are trying to get to food or girls or any other little thing they think they just have to have.
He may have gotten his head through the fence but cut when pulling his head back out...

IMHO bartering is the best way to build relationships with your local community. Now if I could figure out a method to start a bartering program around here......

Just wanted to share of few of the chicken "things" I was given for Christmas....I know you all "get-it". I mostly get the eye-roll

from everyone else!

The old metal sign & googly-eyed bird is from a friend who thinks having chickens is the best!! She is always happy to "feed" the chicken decor-craziness in my house, most of it is from her!!
I am thinking about making a black frame for the sign, would help it to 'pop' even more off the wall, but i don't want to cover the corners..i like the "rusty" stuff!

This oil painting is from my mom, she is awesome!! It is done by a local artist in Lancaster CO...'Elsie Beiler' . DH even liked it so much it is hanging in the living room!!

Dheltzel, how about a trade on some guinea when you start hatching them...
Right now, the possibility of those guineas laying eggs seems remote, I hope they actually do start laying in the spring. I added a nest box so they can get used to the idea. I've hatched bought eggs before, and guineas are supposed to lay pretty well once they start. We must have at least 8 hens in there, so I could be inundated with keets, or it could be like last year's turkey adventures - a complete bust.

So, I can't promise anything, but if I get keets, you are welcome to some for sure.
