@Auroradream, looks like you've got things under control, blue Kote is great stuff.

I am at the tail end of a 2 week school break, and consequently hiding in the bedroom with a bottle of wine. Enough said?

Brought in the New Year with the Polar Bear Dip in Ocean City. It was unbelievably cold

Good for you! Would love to do it.

We started making wine after our daughter was born. I think we need a still next because by the time she's a teen we're going to need something stronger. Momma told me I would have one like me and she wasn't joking!

Just wanted to share of few of the chicken "things" I was given for Christmas....I know you all "get-it". I mostly get the eye-roll:rolleyes: from everyone else! The old metal sign & googly-eyed bird is from a friend who thinks having chickens is the best!! She is always happy to "feed" the chicken decor-craziness in my house, most of it is from her!! I am thinking about making a black frame for the sign, would help it to 'pop' even more off the wall, but i don't want to cover the corners..i like the "rusty" stuff!;) This oil painting is from my mom, she is awesome!! It is done by a local artist in Lancaster CO...'Elsie Beiler' . DH even liked it so much it is hanging in the living room!!:yesss:
I love the painting, it's beautiful!

This is a good thought, that looks clean enough that it may have been a slice from a broken piece of wire.... I have seen our roosters catch their combs in the chicken wire before, the danged birds don't have the common sense God gave a flea sometimes when they are trying to get to food or girls or any other little think they think they just have to have.
He may have gotten his head through the fence but cut when pulling his head back out...
only thought of it because she didn't notice blood on/near anyone else...my Marans lost a front piece of her comb on the small-squared fencing that was on the small-coop they used to be in...wasn't even jagged or anything..she would get crazy in there so any thing could have happened..
i only found it to be the reason because there was blood on the fence & the missing 'tip' of her comb was laying right there in the sand...crazy!! Never thought I would see that!
We like to barter and trade too. We work hard on the wine and would never give someone something we wouldn't drink or eat ourselves. For the past several years, instead of cash, we pay the person who does our taxes with wine, homemade jelly, jarred tomatoes and sauce.
this is the future for more & more people...who has the extra for even the items we need?...I myself think this is awesome & why not?! Just my opinion though..
I am in "the works" for a trade kinda thing with my neighbors who have the goats and other animals...they like to go camping & just leave the house for a day, but with the goats needing milked, it is difficult for them...so they asked me if I would be interested in trading some of my time for what I get from the goats. Then there is the whole "bee" thing..honey for space, there maybe even a possibility for trading milking time for an my own goat!!...you get the picture

...Now, I just need the extra hands to help with all of this..

IMHO bartering is the best way to build relationships with your local community. Now if I could figure out a method to start a bartering program around here......
maybe just start by talking with other neighbors who have animals.. or a trade (as in carpenter, plumber)...just a thought...

Roar has not been a good day for me. Besides being miserably grumpy after a night of very little sleep, kids not listening and arguing all day, little Wynter getting hurt and now my husky's face is all swollen up. I know she has a bad tooth and I need to get her to the vet :( turns out, I was completely out of benedryl and had to make a trip in to town. Got there just in time for the grocery store to be closed so I had to get the generic stuff at Sheetz. I'm going it works just as good. I wanted to pick up some Neosho in too but surprise! They don't have it. I broke down and bought some ice cream and rented a moxie from the redbox. I'm so done with today.

The generic should work just the same. Years ago before I became a SAHM, I was an assistant buyer at Rite Aid, worked in OTC. The FDA mandates the active ingredients in drugs must be the same (generic vs name brand) only filler ingredients can be different.

Hope your pup is feeling better and that the ice cream and movie does the same for you.

Their soft skin sure does tear easily.... if you have flushed/cleaned it and blu-coated it then that is the biggest part of the battle.  if it is gaping or easily seen when he moves around you could probably use a drop or two of super glue in the center to hold the edges together to prevent it from gaping and showing the red underneath.  It isn't a good idea to totally close off a wound (in my opinion) but just one point of glue in the center will act like a suture to help hold the edges closer to each other so they can fill in and heal.
Triple antibiotic ointment can help also, but make sure it is the type without the pain reliever.... the pain reliever is something that can't be used on chickens.

If it helps, we had a young hen with a gaping wound on her side (from an amorous rooster) and with simple cleaning, blue coat and some triple antibiotic it healed in a surprisingly short time. (due to location on her we also placed a hen saddle on her for a couple of weeks)

They do recover, I'm still amazed that my Hennifer Lopez is doing as well as she is after having a fox munch on her fanny.

My stupid birds are all roosting outside (pretty much in a circle around 1 of my oldest son's dogs) & refuse to go in my makeshift temporary coop. The stupid dog has jumped on my fence so many times it no lobger stands (can I get away with an "accidental" dog shooting?) Everyone is pretty much free ranging thanks to the dog.
I have found that the only way to move a broody is to grab broody first, cram her into wherever she is going & quickly toss chicks in after her. She calms pretty quickly after she has a couple chicks back, but you get nailed everytime you reach for 1 if she stays til last.

Thanks! I will do that next time.

:highfive: ...so glad to hear you got one today!! ...We are still waiting...impatiently:rolleyes: ...., maybe we should should get them drunk too:cool: ...
okay.., remember YOU opened the door on this one...what did you have to "barter" to get THAT kitchen, or do I NOT want to know? ...:smack  ...
our girls girls are so hard-up for some WARM sunshine in the AM that the motion sensor light beams are the go to place after eating breakfast, silly chickens:p
oh boy..poor little guy your not kidding!! wowsers..did you happen to check around the pen/run area to make sure there isn't any metal or something that could snag? Just a thought...hope he gets better fast!

I did open that door! But sorry to disappoint your overactive imagination ;). My husband is self employed and does IT work, builds and repairs computers. One of his clients who does kitchen renovations needed all new computers and monitors and stuff. My husband came up with the idea about 2 years ago, I thought he was crazy at the time. But as I sit here looking at my demo-ed kitchen, I'm so proud! But because this is an older house with all kinds of stuff never done to it, my husband might be working this job for a while. :p All of the aplliances and the extra work from the plumber and the electrician is on us, but still, we could have not done this otherwise. I will be sure to post before and after pics.

You go girl! You're a braver one than I!

Lucky tax person! I've been bartering with a personal trainer for a few years now, and we both love it. I do her nails, and then she trains me while her nails are drying. Of course I never like it when I'm sore and limping the next day.....:old. Oh, and my brother bartered for a '54 Chevy wagon in decent shape; he's a mechanic and did a set of brake lines and some other work on their suburban.

I agree. There is a bartering section on Craigslist, but I haven't checked it too much.

@LittleMissPurdy. Totally get the Christmas gifts. They are awesome. Love that painting! My DH bought me a chicken necklace. He said it was pretty hard to find. :woot
