hello & welcomeNew to chickens but just ordered our first batch of meat birds and hens. (I'm so excited) Anyways originally I am from Vermont and now I live in Shavertown, PA. Which is Luzerne county.
I think she is pretty no matter what she is
oh my goodnessI saw a video on Facebook. The guy took the outer skin out of the jar to make it easier to see if all the skin was off the cloves.
I do use a whole bulb when I can sauce. But it only makes a few jars. :-D Want a kiss?!?! :-X
LMP, the devil can have my hands! :-D
I saw someone had a bumper sticker on their truck that said "Coon hunters do it all night". LOL sounds like you have a great broody!Just came back in from doing my coop chores. Today was the first time I've noticed any signs of a predator (besides summer time hawks). The whole way around both coops/runs and even on top of them were little foot prints. Looked like raccoon :/ obviously he couldn't find a way to get in since all my birds were fine but he must've been out there sometime this afternoon. It's a bit nerve racking. in other news, my broody is starting to check out the nest boxes again. She was in and out about 4 times while I was out there doing stuff. Her babies are all pretty much self sufficient now being about 9 weeks old. They only snuggle with her at night now. Little Wynter is quite a live wire already. I watched him try to beat one of the 15 week old girls down in the pecking order. Both of them went at each other feet first. He's still too little to kick butt yet lol.
My one leghorn was so skittish it jumped over the neighbors fence several times until one of the dogs got it.They just seem terrified of me, I can't even look at them without sending them into a fit. None of my other breeds have acted anywhere near this way.
Awesome, they look beautiful. The only redeeming quality I find in leghorns is that they are egg laying machines (the commercial ones, I have nothing nice to say about the others). Every other thing about them is a negative for small flocks. But most of the negatives go away if crossed to another breed. Last year I hatched a bunch of "super blue egg layers", but putting an Ameracauna roo over commercial white leghorns. The chicks were large and robust. They did very well, but were hard to sex due to many of them getting the pea combs from their dad. I free ranged some that I suspected were roos when I needed cage space. The hens I kept, and the ones that were free ranged accidentally, are excellent layers. We sold several pullets and the buyers were very happy with them. People say they look like owls, from the Ameracauna cheeks. One in a layer pen:Our best free range egg producer. She likes this nest and reliably lays an egg there every day. Looks comfy, doesn't she? This pic was with a flash, it's quite dark back in those straw bales.

Wow! Congrats! You can buy a cheap digital Camera on ebay.Lots of new baby chicks this morning! I left for work early to avoid the temptation to pull the hatched ones out early. I can't wait to get home and put them into the brooder and see what actually hatched! I really need a digital camera too, so I can show them off. My phone won't let me pull pics off. I suppose because I went too "low tech". Hello, Craigslist.
Best wishes, keep us updated!everyone keep your fingers crossed for me![]()
it's day 12 on my first incubator attempt.....all speed eggs. I candled today and most of them are wiggling and kicking like crazy! I had 3 clears to toss. 2 might be clear but I couldn't tell for sure being dark eggs and 1 MIGHT be a quitter but again, couldn't tell. I'm getting so excited!
Had a rough day today. I fell on the ice again on my hip again. Couldn't sleep last night because of the pain. Went down the hill and seen raccoon prints around my silkie run and duck run. My traps are frozen to the ground so I can't even set them. Argh!!!Get to my Golden laced wyandotte and Easter egger pen and see blood all over the place, I freak out. It seems my 2 roos, in 2 different pens, are fighting. My older Golden laced wyandotte lost half his wattle and some of his comb to the Black Australorp. They were still fighting through the fence at 3ish when I went back down for water and egg check. Is there anything I should watch out for with my rooster tomorrow? I hope they will not fight tomorrow
I don't know what I can do for him. NO way hubby will let this rooster in the bath tub to heal.![]()
Took my son to the doctor's this afternoon and she looked at him and swabbed him for the flu. She said it will take 10 minutes for the test to be completed. She came back in about a minute later and said he was positive for the flu! He is highly contagious and needs to stay home from school for the week.I hope the rest of us don't get the flu. I am going around with the wipes cleaning everything he touches. Argh he has been sick since Saturday night so hopefully we aren't sick yet, we will be ok.![]()
I went to the hardware store this morning and got the ice gripes for the bottom of my boots. Paid $30 for them. I figure they will be worth their weight in gold if I don't fall anymore!!! I tried them out on the icy hill and I didn't fall!!!That was my good part of the day!![]()
Welcome! I lived in Dallas when I was a kid. There are auctions about an hour north of Harrisburg Remind me and I can hunt up some links for you.Anyone know of any farm auctions out here? (Luzerne area) I'm willing to travel. When I lived in Vermont I used to go to an auction in NY that sold everything from farm equipment to animals. Haven't found anything here except product auctions. I'm considering making the trek up to ny one night just for the auction.
