I was going to liken it to fingernails on a blackboard, at least that is how the hens sound to me. Look up some clips on Youtube of both species and you'll see what we are talking about.

I think if we combine those two noises, nails on a chalk board in staccato bursts, we would have a perfect guinea call!

I'm selling my guineas at the first swap in March, I can't STAND those things. I only have five, but God are they annoying! You can't even talk to your neighbors outside because they surround them and scream and you have to yell back and forth.

Beautiful. I tried to talk hubby into getting some peafowl and he said no way. They make too much noise. He hates the noise the guineas make and doesn't want anymore loud critters lmao. Maybe one day we will have a big piece of land without neighbors being so close and I can talk him into it

I could probably whisper and get the same effect here...

I think that's both very wise and kind to the animals.
Gorgeous! Where in PA are you? Are they noisy? That's what I've heard about them.

Just FYI, if either of you ever decide to look into Peafowl, the greens are quiet. The second picture I posted is Fred, he is a Burmese Green. Greens are not winter hardy so we keep him in a heated shed during the cold months, not very convenient, but he's gorgeous. The thing is, we cross him with blue hens to produce a hybrid known as a spalding, these spaldings are winter hardy and will hopefully be quiet like their father. The last picture is a 2013 hatch spalding, he hasn't reached maturity yet so I am not certain how vocal he will be. This site has recordings of green peafowl vocalizations so you can hear them and I would say Fred does this maybe 10 times a year.

do peacocks make a lot of noise too?

I have heard guinea do...............I cant say i know much about this group of birds but peacocks are pretty............

are their eggs edible and or desirable?

can you see how one pretty picture raises all kinds of questions............and possibilities!

Blue Varieties of Peafowl are quite loud during breeding season. Green and green hybrid varieties are not nearly as vocal. I posted a link above if you are interested in hearing the call of a green. My green does this maybe 10 times a year that I hear.

Picture a dippy egg that covers the bottom of a typical med. sized frying pan and requires 2 pcs of toast and tastes the exact same as a chicken egg.




They can be raised to be quite friendly as well.

They are bigger than they look in the photos. And I think Mama has had enough of this indoor treatment. Next week I will let them outside.

Can not wait till early spring when everyone is complaining about the stink of the birds that are being hatched now...
I will wait, I d not want a repeat of last year wen winter would not end.......
With that said...I ordered ducklings to be shipped on 3/3... and I am patiently waiting for dheltzel to set some guinea eggs......

I found the first guinea egg today!!
Actually found 2, but one was outside in the mud. The dry one will go into the incubator.

Thanks Roseschickies! I do know I can get some pallets around here, I've seen them quite a bit. It will just be a challenge to make it pretty, but I'm sure I can figure something out. I may end up doing the wood pallet thing.

My top picks for chicken breeds are:

Buff Orpington
Barred Plymouth Rock
Welsummer
Maran

I can only have 3-4, I need them to be friendly, fairly good egg layers, and able to stay warm in winter. And I think fat chickens are adorable (healthy fat, not Racoon's wish-come-true fat).

Look! This is when I first came to this thread. Now I have 7 hens, 2 chicks and a Roo! So much for my initial plan...

The little brown one is a pullet, not quite sure yet on the black one, but it does look like a rooster.
