Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

My stupid birds are all perched outside in the open. A few go in the coop, some go under the cabin, a few more huddle under an old brooder on it's side...but most are perched on top of the coop out in the open. All are doing fine.

I have mine on tonight too, I did last night as well but I normally don't do the light thing any more. I did the first year we had them but I only had 2 then & I worried they couldn't keep each other warm enough, now I have 8 & they all huddle together on the roost & that makes me feel better...lol

Wind chill is determined by the additional heat loss that will occur with exposure to the wind/evaporation... so if they are out of the wind they should be fine at the regular temp. To help you could get one of those big temp gauges they sell at most stores and hang it somewhere in the run where you can see it easily from outside It will give you a good idea of what their temps are in the run compared to outside temps. After seeing the 2 compared for a few weeks it will give you a good handle on how to figure what your chickens are dealing with in their run.

Thanks a bunch Fisher, that helps a lot. I do have a thermometer in the run, in the coop & right outside the run door..lol Now that I understand this, I can make better decisions.

Question time for you experienced keepers please.

I noticed I haven't been getting any eggs from my Silkie barnyard mix Malificent recently. I keep looking to see if she has been laying somewhere else, but I haven't found anything. I think she may be eating her eggs. :sick The other day, I noticed a piece of eggshell and yolk outside of the coop on the ground. I thought one had maybe rolled out and broken, and the girls took advantage. It doesn't appear that she is eating anyone else's eggs though. I haven't found any other traces, other than the piece that is frozen to the ground. I believe she was laying her eggs in my small little house I had originally built for my Silkies.

If she is egg eating, what's the best way to break her of it? Thanks!

It sounds brutal out there, and at least one place is predicting -1 for tonight. I can't remember the last time I was in a place where temps went below 0, wind chill, yes.

In warmer news, there are 70+ eggs set to hatch today or tomorrow

And I put 153 new eggs into the incubators last might. Yeah, that's plural now, I started up the Genesis full of Rhodebars because I sold all of those chicks yesterday. 10 to one person who wants to start their own self sustaining flock.

Now what to do next week? Startup a 3rd incubator or go to a meeting? Are there any IA (Incubating Anonymous) meetings in the area?

If there are any of those meetings, we sure as heck wouldn't know about them!

Feed her dried toasted egg shells.

8* and super windy here. Poor girls. I pulled out their heat lamp from when they were chicks and I attached it to a sturdy structure where they are snuggling. Seems like it's helping...

Yep its nasty out there....1/2 my crew stayed in the coops...the other 1/2 are huddled under a bush next to the house...unfortunately, I will have every couple of hours to make sure everyone is ok......
