That's so sad :(. I always make excuses to go to tsc when they have chicks. Like Oh I forgot this, or I need more food (Even though I have 3 bags at home). But I have managed to never buy any.... I have a sq npip flock so hatchery chicks just don't fit in....

i have had all of these people stop to buy eggs...you end up saying."why did you stop"

Love that! The question I get most often is "Don't you need a rooster?"

It's very interesting to me that this ignorance has all been probably in the last 60-80 years. Before that, people knew much more about their food and its origins.
Hello (again)!

I've been a member of BYC for a few years now, and have finally convinced my husband that this is the year for chickens!!! (And possibly a few guineas, too - surprisingly he's more open to that option, go figure)

It helps that we have one close neighbor with chickens and a couple friends with chickens as well that keep asking him, "what are you waiting for?" They have figured out the "happy wife = happy life" equation. My hubby is apparently a little slow on the uptake, there!!

We are in central PA - Mifflinburg - and are on the trail of a coop builder that was recommended to my husband as selling better coops than he could buy the lumber for. We'll see this weekend...

Does anyone have recommendations on where to get chicks? My only ideas right now are Tractor Supply or mail order, and since I only am planning on 3-4 hens to start, mail order options are limited (nevermind that I would need to buy 15+ guineas to be shipped most places!)

I also considered started pullets, but like the idea of being "mom" to the little ones for a while at first so they get used to being handled.

I am sure I"ll have a thousand questions as I embark on this journey (my husband has signed on for the construction end of things - I get the day to day chores, which is fine with me!

Thanks for reading, and thanks for any advice you can give!! I am SO EXCITED!!!

Alison

I planned for 3-4 hens in my small suburban backyard. Now I have 8 hens and a Silkie rooster (although he was a mistake, he hasn't been loud enough yet to be evicted...). Definitely make a coop for more chickens than you planned for. I didn't listen to that advice and I regret it. Everyone here is very kind and you will easily get your questions answered. I agree with Dheltzel. Keep an eye out on Craigslist for people selling chicks. Many here raise some as well.
Which came first...

The chicken or the coop?

Sometimes I think I'm so funny! Lol
My coop came first! But I am a nerd and like to plan things out.

My wife has banned me from tractor supply for the next two weeks!

How rude! But I kinda understand, I probably shouldn't go near that store either.

The babies have arrived, but my phone is being a butt & won't load pix.

25 red sex-link males, all solid white except 1 who has a tiny black dot on his head & faint grey racing stripes & 1 who has pale tan racing stripes

21 broad breasted white poults (they tossed me an extra)

All babies arrived alive, only a couple look a bit lethargic but they will walk around a little before plopping back under the light when you stand them on their feet, so my guess is they are just sleepy.

And 2 or 3 of the poults are the biggest loudmouths I have ever heard. Hoping they calm down soon since the brooder is right beside my bed. I may not sleep for weeks!
Congrats! Best of luck! Are all of those turkeys for eating?

it was out of the red pullets bin.
That is sad. I can understand not selling them, but if they happened to fall into a little box in your cart? What's wrong with that?

I think it is funny when I am picking out chicks or ducks to buy online and my dad is at my house and he walks over and says 'Oh, those are pretty!" I just say "Those are the wrong color" And he calls me Racist! Or when I am culling some ducks because they don't have great colors and that makes me racist.

Hello Alison in Mifflinburg. I am just outside Jersey Shore. We're practically neighbors!

Miss Vicki Chicky has been giving me a steady supply of eggs. Now the other 5 need to start up again. I really really REALLY don't want to be buying both feed and storebought eggs.

if you ever wondered if a call duck size was worthwhile to process, here is what I ended up with...my scale is at the farm so I can not weigh it, but this is in a typical chinese takeout dish..

I am only feeding two older people ...we do not eat like we used to...
hopefully with sides this will be enough.

That is a call duck? Humn I thought about butchering an extra male but didnt think there would be enough meat to be worth it.....

this was an injured east indie drake, he was only call duck size to begin with...fits rather snuggly in the take out container
This is funny to me because I had someone here yesterday picking up a pair of call ducks. My 20 yr old told her he would never pay that much for those ducks because there wasn't enough meat on them to eat & he couldn't make money off of them. The customer just laughed at him & said, "Well your mom just made 60 bucks off of them."

60 bucks for a pair? Sounds good! Are the sq? I have trouble finding people to buy mine locally and they are top notch show quality. My chocolates won states in kentucky last yr! I have only ever got one buyer and sold a drake for 10 dollars....
