Congrats on your decision....most of us have the standard advise....build a coop twice to three times the size you think you want...my 1/2 acre fenced backyard handles about 15-17 on the free range thing...you will want to research breeds...Large Foul vs bantam, cold weather tolerant, breeds that bear confinement, egg color...what ever breeds you think you want, that will change(hint extra coop space).....Most of the folks will have chicks available soon if not already, but you might have to travel a bit..and will want to raise you babies in a batch..you cannot buy one or two at a time..my two cents....

I got my coop from a guy in quakertown....he was listing on CL...it was better price (and value)...

I'm in Elverson, PA (Berks/Chester Co), and looking for someone to build me a coop, or a local place that sells them. Any suggestions?

My husband is an instigator. He keeps sending me pictures of "birthday ideas", like this one: http://chickensaloon.com/the-tavern-backyard-chicken-coop/

That's the style I like, and he built me a coop like that about 7 years ago, but we had to sell it when we moved. I don't really feel like going to the trouble of building my own this time around.

I would suggest a bigger coop, and one that is better made. I have heard bad news from those styles. Try going to any shed dealer, they usually have some decent coops. Also craigslist is excellent for cooop if you can act fast and transport.

IMHO, any decent size shed can work very will add a coop. Cut a few windows and cover with 1x2 wire, hinge the piece you cut out from the top as a wind break, rain blocker, put a few plastic creates, like milk crates as nest boxes and a couple 2x4's as roosts. Of course cut in a pop door.
"Instant" coop.

Lots of sheds show up on craigslist in the spring.

That's good to know! Thank you! Thank you for the advice, I've only ever had this type, so I don't know the advantages to other kinds. I guess I should browse the coop section of the forum before I make a decision!

Definitely going to check craigslist, thanks! That's where I sold mine, but I would like one a little better made than the one we whipped up with scrap wood ;)

The Purina free plans are a is starting point to build. It's only 4x4, but can easily be stretched to 4x8. A decent size for a few birds.

Looking at others coops is a great way to get ideas. It's amazing what others come up with and modify. I've even seen s plastic Rubbermaid shed modified.

(hint, hint, people).

I went into the tractor supply today, needed wood chips for the nesting boxes. I see they have some chicks and no tags on the bins. I run into the manager we call The Man That Knows. He was saying they are trying a new breeder this year. He told them not to ship any chicks yet since it was too cold. He opened the first box of chicks all 100 dead on arrival. He said they are dropping like flies. He doesn't even want to sell them to people. The new breeder didn't even tell them what breed of birds they got, all they said is pullets, heavy breed straight run and bantams. He said now he looks like an idiot when people come in and ask what kind of chicks they have. He is not pleased with the chicks and the situation this year.

I just found out that Leonard Nimoy died and I sent a text to my hubby that Mr. Spock died =(. He texts me back bag him and freeze him. I forgot for a second that I had named one of the drakes Mr. Spock because he had black "hair" on his head and boldly went where no others went and got stuck and I saved his life.
