ducky update.... still not a big problem, but I do not leave food and water in 24/7......figured if they would be outside with a broody she would only take them to food and water a few times a day....

They are adorable! I agree about the food and water.... and saves a heck of a mess, no doubt!
I am using the same pool right now in the house as a chicken keep.... originally used it for an injured hen (and a buddy, so she wasn't lonely) then for Gracie and her brood of 6 for almost 3 weeks (they are back into the coop now) and now it is again being used for a hen with a cut on her back, and another buddy hen for her.
We put down a heavy sheet on the floor, then the pool and then surround it will 3ft fence panels we bought used (I think they were rabbit hutch fencing originally).
DH and I are planning on picking up another one, maybe a bit bigger for future use once they are back in the stores again.

those little pools are great, easy to hang a light above if needed, easy to dump out and just hose clean....
it is not in the pick but I have wire that goes around it to make it a little higher when needed...
most critters here will be moved to barn by 2 weeks or a little after

Yep! We put about 1.5" of sand into the pool, then a nest box of whatever size is needed. Hang a feeder and waterer from a dowel rod stuck through at a corner of the fence. This set up mimics the coop and allows us to use. cat litter scoop for quick cleaning and to throw in scratch to keep them occupied and also allows them to dust when they want, though I do hate the mess that the dust baths cause, oh well....

@wingstone 2 pilgrim eggs today. Apparently I missed yesterday's in the hay. My son found them both a few minutes ago after my daughter looked & didn't find anything. So I have 3 for you now. I can ship Saturday if you want to try for a few more.

Anyone have silkie chicks for sale? I need some hens, I want to concentrate on breeding some silkies. I am in Monroe county and willing to drive a bit, depending on location.

Oh it feels so springy today! There are tiny patches of grass and driveway slowly beginning to show themselves around our house! Most of our yard is knee deep snow though so it'll take a while, exorbitant since we're down in a little valley surrounded by trees. I'm just thrilled to see it starting to go!

In chicken news, I figured since it was getting warmer out, I would start to harden off my chicks in the garage. They're 5 weeks old already so it won't be long until they go to the coop. I took one of their heat lamp away and uncovered half of the brooder. They still have the one lamp they can go under to get warm though.

Did they have any chicks? The TSC up north are not getting or keeping chicks at all! Am getting a shipment of chicks tomorrow and wanted to buy more and age them together, hoping they get some in. (whatever they will be, they don't know) :(

from what the Parkersburg TSC said if they don't sell immediately and more are coming in, they get discounted to make room for new arrivals...

I think it is funny when I see the map of the "Heat wave" hitting the U.S and upper pa and new york dont get the heat wave.... I live directly on the NY line. My property butts against it. So like 95% of the U.S gets a heat wave and I dont. lol. Well it was 45 today!

Put 74 eggs into lockdown tonight for this weekend's hatch. The Feb settings have been about 1/3 not developing, I assume because the bitter cold damaged the eggs, but not enough to show cracks.

8 of them are turkey eggs. I love our baby turkeys, I don't want to sell any of them because they are so cute and friendly, but we have 20 in brooders already, and are averaging 3-4 a week hatching. That's gonna add up to a lot of turkey poults.

Everyone should raise some heritage turkey poults at least once. You'll fall in love with them.
