Thanks Blarney!

I ended up setting a total of 22 turkey & 44 chicken yesterday. I'll save up another week's worth & do it again. I think everyone is finally getting back in gear after the move. I've had 5 turkey eggs from 6 hens twice the past week. I usually get 3-4. So they are working on getting in full swing. The chickens gave me 15 yesterday & 12 the day before from 23 hens. I know 2 new ones for sure aren't laying, because they are in quarantine & can't lie to me. 2 of the chicken hens in the peafowl pen aren't laying either because I only get 1 little cream egg from there each day. The other girls seem to be taking turns on what days they lay. Hopefully everyone will be in gear soon.

Sent round 2 today. See if this set makes it.

If you get tired of turkey, return the favor. :)

I have you & Blarney both on the list! I want to set 1 more big batch, then I'll share some with y'all. I want to make sure the slates are pure. They need another week in the new pen first.

I was covered in BluKote this week too.  My turkeys were pecking the vent of 2 of their turkey buddies. Unfortunatly those 2 didn't make it. Now I am down to 4 turkeys. :( I don't know what it is with this group of turkeys. They love to peck the vents.

I lost 3 broilers & a poult to vent picking about 2 weeks ago. They were playing football with intestines when I caught them. Gaaaaaggg!!!

@Fisherlady, why only the edges of the wound with triple antibiotic?
generally for two issues....
1- the edges of most wounds are at highest risk of infection due to debris being caught under the edges of the skin and the hidden spaces of the edges (under skin flap) dry slowest. The center area of the wound is easiest to clean and dries quickly, so lower infection risk there.
2- the ointment can prevent the blu-kot from sticking and other birds will notice the wound quickly, the edges are usually at least partly hidden by surrounding feathers

Also, I usually cut off any feathers within about a quarter inch of the wound edges...they will grow back later but I don't like them tugging on the skin around the edges, when the feather gets tugged it can lift the edge and tear any new scabbing or skin which is starting to heal which again creates an infection risk which could easily be missed on a recheck.

What is everyone doing with all the chicks being hatched, are they really selling, I would think that the market is flooded right now.

I had my own blue cote episode a few days ago, I attempted to unclog a can of it, got me along the side of the neck really good.
I am also having issue's with chicks pecking the Butt's of others, nothing seems to be helping, it is not a space issue since they are free range..
The geese seem to prefer the daily pile of greens over anything else that I feed, the ducks prefer the whole grains and I notice the chickens prefer to be different everyday......I have not bought any feed except 1 starter bag when the birds were hatched, I find myself with a notebook writing things down for comparison like the leghorn chicks are great at foraging even at only 2 weeks old. The meat birds are also looking good, it may take a little longer o reach weight but they are being fed natural feeds like grasses and whole grains..
Some of this is due to being completely broke and jobless but it has also become an experiment in watching how the different breeds react to different things..and in my way of thinking, birds survived long before commercial feed, it is just a matter of learning how to do that again.

Certain breeds are still selling really well, the past few weeks I have sold all the Ameraucanas I can hatch before they are dry, but I have a lot of extra BCM's and Olive Eggers. I'm not too concerned because it's warm enough they can go outside fairly young and both of those sex out quickly (compared to Ams with their pea combs). I really won't mind raising a few dozen extra pullets, if I can't sell them all, I would like to free range a bunch of them. I never need to "fire sale" them away like TSC does because I can raise and release them, and make more money (in the long run) than selling them for $1.

Last year, my most desperate customers contacted me right after "chick days" was over. They did the "right thing" and got their coop built first, but then when they went to TSC for chicks, there were none to be had. Anyone know when "chick days" ends this year? I should be prepared for that.
