Silkie,  Did any of the eggs end up making it? Was just wondering what colors you got out of the batch.

I had to cull 2 whites that broke their yolks during hatch. I lost 1 little black the first night. Several pipped but didn't make it out. I know for sure I have 3 black & a reddish that made it. There may be more that hatched but didn't get marked as yours because I had an emergency & was out of town before they finished hatching & my kids didn't know to mark them.

OK... just wanted to see how they made out for hatch rates... sorry you didn't get more

I would cross Ameraucanas with Breda Fowl. Those 2 breeds have all those things and the Bredas lay white eggs so they won't "contaminate" the blue eggs to green. Getting all those characteristics to show and breed true might be a lot of work. Fixing dominant traits like blue eggs is harder than the recessive traits because the recessives (like white eggs) can hide and pop up later. Egg color is particularly challenging because it never shows in the males at all.

I think I'd concentrate most on getting the Breda traits to show (feathered legs and vulture hocks) because crossing back to Ams will be easier to manage, and they are a lot more common.
That is wonderful advice. And gives me a place to start, some things to consider and now what genetics to research!

Great recommendation on the Breda Fowl. They are verrrryyy interesting now that I've given them a second look. And apparently a challenge to acquire, fun!

Thank you for the advice!!!

does anyone have any willow bushes that I can get cutting from ??

I have the old fashioned pussy willows, already rooted in water in a bucket. I have no idea what to do with them all but it seemed a shame to not root them.
Free to anyone that wants some, just put them in a damp location, or make it very damp for the first year until they get going.

I have a beautiful blue Breda roo free ranging around the farm. He's yours if you want him - but I can only catch him at night.
I can also get eggs if you want to raise up a group. I have a good friend who lives here in Pottstown with a breeding group of them.

There is a reason they are rare, they are not great layers and their heavily feathered feet are messy in the the mud and snow. Crossing them would reduce those negatives.

Ok, so I have 2 weeks now to get ready for hatch day. Niko is in the regular nest box with her 17 eggs. It is 2' off the ground. Put a wee railing on the ramp to the coop? When they hatch should they be at ground level? Separated from the other 5 girls? OK to have them all together?

you can see the nest area to the left. Niko is in the back corner.

I pulled a crapload of eggs from the bator the other day. Apparently the kids had it unplugged more than I thought. Finding the right humidity is still a challenge & somehow my temp got turned up to 104F. Not sure how or when. I'm totally amazed I have anything left hatching.

@chiques chicks I have a SFH from you pipped, but wrong end. Already had 2 of my eggs set with yours pip wrong end & die before zipping, so I'm watching it like a hawk & helping as needed.

@Blarneyeggs I pulled a bunch of clears & quitters from yours. None of the tollies even started & I think I pulled quitters in the orps too. Not sure if it was fertility, shipping or my bator that was the issue.

I just set 100 of my own chicken & 5 turkey. We shall see in 3 weeks what my actual hatch rate on non-shipped eggs is. Hopefully I have the issues with the bator sorted out now.
