Welcome! Somewhat crazy group here, but also very helpful.

Beware, it's full of enablers. :)

Maybe this is a stupid question but I want to know the answer so I'm going to ask it. For those with DIY incubators, what is the point/need in having a thermostat if you are using a light bulb for a heat source? Yes, I have been looking into building a bator.

couldn't get this pic to downsize, but this was on my facebook feed from a group...just something to think about for those with quail eggs... pickled quail eggs is one of the things I miss about the quail... I would definitely buy them

My dad likes to send 10 dozen home with us every 2 weeks. We pickle half and hardboil the rest to toss in salad. Think I'm going to try mustard pickled soon.

to maintain the temp... thats what mine is for. I dont have the light on a dimmer so I use the thermostat. works like a charm so far! my last hatch, 17 fertile eggs.. 17 chicks! I also have a computer fan in the cooler.

I was just talking to a relative, he informed me that I need to decide if I want white eggs or brown eggs. If I want white, keep them penned up. If I want brown, they need to scratch in the dirt. I laughed, and said I didn't think so. He insisted. I could not politely convince him otherwise.

What do you need to do if you want green and blue eggs? :lau

@emorems0
I just have my BA roo. I had extras last year :( Mine is a super sweet man but is always on  the girls. He is my sweet rooster. Good thing too because he is huge. I just have 2 GLW roosters that need a new home. Sweet boys too.

Lemme see...green eggs you would have to feed them peas, greenbeans, kale, grass, alfalfa...all the green veggies. For blue eggs, you have to feed them blue berries & put blue food coloring in their water.

I would send him to the freezer if he is aggressive for no reason. All roosters will be slightly cocky, it is just a natural condition to have that bearing so they can maintain order in their flock. But overly pushy or not giving way to any human gets them removed from our yard.

Gabby is my only pure BA... so can't offer you any BAs, though we do have a lot of young fellows, one of whom looks just like Gabby and must be from him and one of our Jersey Giants. If you go to the BA threads on here you should be able to find a good quality cockerel for your flock from one of the breeders. They tend to hold onto a bunch of youngsters until they choose 1 or 2 for future breeding. The rest are still great birds by almost any standards, just not the absolute right fit for their breeding intentions.

Sometimes he's fine and he's always been good with the hens and hasn't even bothered with the turkeys or the 20 smaller chickens we have running around (only the laying hens have had a problem integrating). It's just people... like he's challenging us. Maybe the problem is that we aren't responding the right way and it's encouraging him to continue with the aggression. I pinned him down the other day when he came after me and he was good for a while after that, but my kids can't do that. Does the size of his flock make a difference? He only has 3 girls now, so maybe he is 'sexually frustrated'? I feel like he is destined for the freezer, but he is one of the only 2 left from our first hatch.

To keep the temperature constant. The light bulb will generally be off more than on.

There are coolerbator threads on here, and probably step by steps, they aren't hard to build. I have three of various designs including a mini fridge conversion. I use three different thermostat designs and they all work.

Can be mostly made out of scrap you can get for next to nothing, I only bought the thermostat two of mine. I did but light sockets for the other. And some hardware cloth.
