Yep, Zeus is a BCM. I had a really hard time deciding which of the boys I was going to keep for breeding since I ended up hatching 9 out of 12 (all the blue coppers were boys). I'll have to get a better picture of Rosco. He's such a handsome boy but I'm a bit biased seeing as how I didn't think he'd make it in the beginning. I spent a lot of time cuddling him and babying him lol. He's still a big sweet heart now but more interested in the girls than seeing me haha! Thanks dheltzel

BCM's make for some very impressive roos. Welsummers do too. Rhodebars and New Hampshires are the most naturally friendly, though some of the legbars are just as friendly now.

My 2 breeder Rhodebar roos were babied as chicks and got very tame. They live together in harmony and have never been aggressive, though they have the bulk to inflict some pain if they did. Even when I was catching and medicating their hens, they got a bit alarmed but that was all. I get a lot of eggs from that pen, regardless of weather. I've always been impressed by their laying abilities.

Rosco and Zeus really get along well together managing the flock. It seems that not one of them is higher than the other in the ranks. If one mates a hen, the other comes running over to supervise lol, it's funny. Whenever, I'm petting or holding one of the hens still Rosco comes over but never in aggression. He always wants to take advantage of the hen that's occupied with me. More than once, he's hopped on them while I was rubbing them under their wings lol

I agree that BCM's are very impressive boys. They get rather big too and so far, from my experience with them, they seem to be very attentive to their flock duties.

Yeay, Aurora! I just got on to say that I finally have eggs too! Three of them!! I knew that the egg song was too intense to be just practice today. I finally found them in the corner under the boxes.

So happy for both of us!

Awesome!! So glad they finally started egging, this group sure is taking their sweet time about it. I have 2 pullets left from those hatches and they are investigating boxes but no eggs yet.

I think I have two layers. I didn't check for eggs yesterday, but did Tuesday.
Last year I asked about freezer burned chicken. Wing answered me, but darned if I remember what she said!
So, here we go again. Freezer burned turkey. I plan on canning her Sunday. Will canning fix the issue with the damaged part being tough? Will it still taste weird? Is it okay to roast (I use oven bags) her first, or will that cause more problems?

We have been canning processed birds a lot lately, and we often freeze them first till we get enough for a full batch of jars. We allow the meat to thaw normally (no microwave) and then strip it off of the bone and raw pack it. If any meat was freezer burnt i haven't noticed it being different after the canning process, though I would expect some reduced quality if it was severely burnt or if a large portion was effected. Primary cause of reduced quality would be due to freezer burnt meat being dried out and that would effect the amount of juice produced in the jar if there was a lot of it burnt.

Leaving for work this morning I heard Kevin (my 3 month old SLW) giving a valiant attempt at crowing. Its the first time I've heard him do it (doesn't mean it was his first attempt overall) I heard him 3 times before I realized what it was.

Not sure if it sounded like a screech owl (never heard one before) or not but it sure was funny sounding.

@dheltzel I think this Maran is is Roo. Your thoughts? :D Anyone else here is free to chime in too. I think it's neat that the one Rhodebar is slightly darker than the other. This is three chicks, just to clarify. And look at my pretty pumpkin plant! It's doing surprisingly well for being in a bad spot. ;)

Looks like a roo, but I'm not certain yet, give it another week or 2.

Pumpkins seem to sense when they are in "weed mode" and grow much faster and bigger. I found 1 growing next to a run and thought "oh, it will be cute there", but now it's 4 ft high and starting to grow out at a tremendous speed. If I had intentionally planted it, I'm pretty sure it would have died already.

Will do. Yeah, I'm sure my efforts to plant a pumpkin would have failed. I just want one pumpkin! :fl
