@barbie, love the picture of the birds running amuck. It really has a way of calming your soul.

I made some mushroom soup yesterday, did NOT turn out well. I'm thinking of adding chicken, celery and dumplings and calling it chicken and dumplings with mushroom.

Sounds like a good plan to me...I've never tried making mushroom soup, is it a cream base or a clear broth base?
I do love mushrooms....

I'm starving already! I have a quadruple batch of chicken noodle soup started up :) we'll be having it for dinner tonight and canning the rest. It'll be nice this winter when it's freezing out to heat some up.

My pantry is getting bare, and I was dreading pb&j for supper. Then I remembered my canned stuff. Meatball sub! So much better than the alternative!

Our kids go to school in Kennett Square (the mushroom capital of the world, lol). We left a benefit auction last weekend with about 40 lbs of mushrooms, after giving them to neighbors, teachers, bus driver... We still had a ton left, The recipe I use and the kids love has a chicken broth base. When I first calculated the recipe, it needed a little over 3 gallons of chicken stock - so I pulled 5 birds from the freezer that were too small for roasting and cooked them down for 2 days. I'm not sure where I went wrong, but adding back in some of the meat, dumplings and a heaping tablespoon of garlic seemed to set things right.

Looks like some of my chicks will go to their new home this weekend, and the rest this week. I'm pretty sure I am keeping 2...

Here is a quick video from a couple weeks ago. Only people would enjoy this... 11 chicks taking a dust bath with their Mama in the garden bed.

What would cause lethargy and swollen abdomen in a roughly 6 week old chick? My other CCL pullet who had been fine up until today is suddenly very lethargic with a swollen abdomen.I tried massaging it and she managed to poop a little but she looks really bad now, like she might not make it. Any ideas or tips?

Nevermind, she didn't make it. I did an autopsy and couldn't really see anything weird but I've never autopsied a chick before. Her abdominal cavity was filled with a pail yellow fluid. That's why she was so swelled up. I'm really upset about her and now I'm worried about the other 3 in the brooder. They all look fine and are active and none of them have any swelling going on but this one seemed fine before too (though I haven't looked closely). What would cause this?

I am so sorry! I saw your post earlier and just didn't know what to say that would help... I guess you could change out your litter and clean your food and water containers really well. But I'm sure you've already thought of that. . :hugs

I am so sorry you lost her.
I would say that the fluid was ascites, probably an infected umbilical cord that finally overtook her system. I am on my phone so I can't confirm but Google 'ascites' and see if it doesn't show up with infections also...I know it does show up with congestive heart failure and liver diseases...
